Don't get me wrong, this seems like a total panic move by Kentucky, desperately finding someone who will say yes rather than making careful consideration of their actual options (very similar to Groce in that sense), but what Pope did this year stepping way, WAY up in conference strength at BYU was pretty impressive, and a month ago it was a grand NCAA conspiracy that we were going to be forced to play them.

Give him a couple of years and I’m sure some of these comments won’t age well. This guy runs very good stuff. Kentucky sells itself and add in OA + winning and they will be alright. Don’t forget the team a lot of fans didn’t want to play in the 2nd round. I’m not saying he will land a bunch of MicDonalds AA but he will land some good talent.

The other thing with Pope is that sure, he won a title at Kentucky and was a good and well liked player. But it was for two years as a transfer back when that was rare, he's a Mormon from Washington, it's not a hand-in-glove cultural fit really.

It's not like when they almost hired John Pelphrey who wasn't much of a coach but who is a true blue legend of that state and program.

I didn't see the cavalry to defend Billy Donovan's performance as Bulls head coach coming.

The situation isn't remotely his fault, but he's done nothing to distinguish himself either.

Billy would be absolutely insane to leave an NBA job where your owner doesn't care about winning.

He's 60 years old you can deal with BBN or take 7 mil regularly from Reinsdorf as long as the stadium fills. Best job on earth.
He'll be fired by the end of next season. Which won't be his fault, but he's an easy scapegoat.

If he never wants to coach in college again I can't blame him, it's not like he needs the money either way, but his career earnings went down by passing on this job.

Don’t you think retaining OA and adding another power recruiter then he might surprise some folks. Coach Pope can coach.
My thoughts exactly. Pope doesn’t have a home run resume, but he has UK experience as a championship player, he did a very good job at BYU, the resources are some of the best, and if he keeps OA and gets another solid recruiting assistant, I think he can be better than people think. The way the past few years under Cal ended , the recent bar isn’t that high. But at the end of the day UK wants Nattys or a new coach .
