Antigua decided to take the guaranteed salary at Arkansas and stay with Cal rather than wait it out with Pope and other teams …

Chin is going to Arkansas … Short ties are already packed … 💀😂
But if Antigua has to be on the Kentucky Basketball coaching staff as of June 30, 2024 to get his $400,000 retention bonus, how is it going to work? Obviously, Pope will not want him around Lexington while Cal is trying to poach as many of his #1 recruiting class 5 Star players as he can to head to Fayetteville rather than Lexington.
Which begs the question, if Antigua the premier recruiter is responsible for the recruiting relationship of, let's say, 3 of the freshman 5 Stars that signed with Kentucky but that can now leave due to the coaching change, then why couldn't Antigua act like a free agent himself and sign on as an Assistant head coach at whatever school offers him and those 3 recruits the most money if he truly controls them through their parents or handlers? Since it is the Wild West out there right now, what is there to preclude this?

Not a bad comparison.

The IlliniHQ board was the most toxic forum I have ever witnessed, in hindsight I'm shocked the News-Gazette allowed that.
It was called The Cesspool for good reason..............I hardly ever posted there .........snarkyness doesn't even come close to the toxic culture that board had........no moderation at all....................

Maybe it’s just because I’m used to Loyalty (which I’m sure is more tepid than most forums), but I always got the impression we weren’t too horrible to one another…anytime I’ve taken a cursory glance at other fan forums, they are absolutely vicious to one another. I’m sure it’s probably a different story in the twittersphere.
maybe don't want to look at Illini Inquirer (nee Illiniboard). I used to read that as much as this, but got to be such a cesspool. Thanks, Dan

(clearly late to the forum with my response!)

I think the timing of the search really hurt Kentucky. Perhaps they could have landed Muss if he wasn't already off the board. Plus, as others have mentioned, the changing landscape of CBB coupled with the (unrealistic) expectations at UK make this job less desirable that it was in the olden days.
Muss going to the USC was the whole reason Kentucky even had a coaching search in the first place :ROFLMAO:

We're absolute lunatics and one significant way in which we are similar to BBN is that we've been very online since the beginning of that being a possibility. Kentucky is #1 in sheer volume of keyboard warriors and always has been, and we have always punched way above our weight. Both are also more recruiting minutae-focused than average, often caring more about the ups and downs of the recruit rumor mill than actual games being played (though the whole sport is becoming less like that, thankfully).

Still, all college fanbases have broadly similar tics to them, they're all "delusional".

I have always chuckled at the "Whining Illini" moniker we get elsewhere. The sheer volume of things we're complaining about at any given time is pretty remarkable. And we're definitely really, really bad about creepy weirdos in the replies of teenage recruits social media posts. Again, hopefully that era of CBB is fading a bit.

We're also unusually mean to each other. I loved that tweet with the top online rivalries in college basketball and one of the top ones was Illinois vs Illinois.

(One thing we're not and I'm glad we're not is cult-like. We're not like Texas A&M where there's like a whole cosmology and ritualistic practice and fans compete over who is the most pious and personally connected to the inner sanctum. We're a bunch of yahoos lobbing hot takes from our Peoria basements and that's a good thing.)
This is hitting a little too close to home for my liking...

I really believe that the "Weber Wars" really stoked a lot of that. I'll admit that I probably fed some of that, as I felt like Weber should have been let go after the 2010 season and got so mad when I'd see people try to defend him to the end days. I was getting tired of being mediocre - we were the college basketball version of today's Chicago Bulls where we'd sneak into the NCAA tournament every other year as a 7 to 10 seed, maybe eke out a first round win, and then get sacrificed to the 1 or 2 seed.

Of course, I wanted Ron Guenther to exit stage left and ended up with Mike Thomas, so maybe I should have stayed more quiet. :)
A lot of us at the time had high hopes for Mike Thomas (myself included) because of his track record of hiring at Cincy which was pretty great (Brian Kelly and Mick Cronin). No shame in that my guy!

Anyone remember "Merrymen"? Lol, I actually used to prefer the Scout forums to Loyalty (I know...) simply because the same username could post on other teams' message boards, but that board became a negative cesspool in the late Weber years, and it never recovered (JMO). I'd occasionally read it when we got good again, and they all just seemed miserable. I have yet to see a message board anywhere that comes close to Illinois Loyalty ... it's awesome. Don't even get me started on Mizzou's board that looks like it's a SUBPAR board from 1997!

I also just feel really lucky that we have a great online presence. It would be kind of depressing if you were a huge Ohio State basketball fan and even in years where you had a top 15 team, there really was VERY little chatter online to share in the fandom with.
I found the Scout board during the Livingston recruitment. Been stuck on these boards ever sense.

The game has changed. NIL has created parity. What a time!

You got it. Hit the nail on the head. NIL (and The Portal) was the fork in the road that fundamentally changed college ball forever and knocked the old legacy Blue Bloods off their high perch which they enjoyed for FAR, far too long.

Now, lots of teams have a chance and lots of guys have freedoms that were denied to them before. This is a rebirth for college ball that was much needed and which is deeply refreshing.

I get why some fans are uneasy about this change in the game. But I love it and it has breathed new life into a sport that was already very popular but now one that can reach even greater heights. The interest in college ball may even surpass interest in the NBA one day. The NBA has been growing like leaps-and-bounds for decades. But the wildly excessive money now being passed around in the Association and this 'load management' stuff and this lack of playing honest defense has taken the glow out of the NBA for many formerly rabid fans. The NBA isn't going away but college ball is rising higher.

This is the part that gets to me. I don't care how much the guys make. Frankly, they deserve their cut. I am a college basketball junkie, and when the season ends, I use the NBA as my basketball methadone. I was watching the Bulls/Knicks the other night, and the announcers were just going off on the lack of defense they are allowed to play. I don't know why the league thinks a game should be in triple digits in the 3rd quarter... I fail to see why it is better.

but I digress...

I actually think Pope will do just fine at UK. He is a good X's and O's coach who will have state of the art facilities and a NIL bag that is the envy of 98% of the programs in the country. He may not be as slick as Cal when he shows up in your living room, but I think that matters less now than it used to. Bring along a big enough check, and everyone is your best friend. He will get his share of Jims and Joes.

Unfortunately for KY the order of events was wrong for them to get the best candidate.
They won the $30M lottery having Calipari resign
Unfortunately best candidate who was willing to move was Musselman (2 elite 8, 2 sweet 16 in just 8 years) who went to USC.
I would have called him to see if he would leave USC for KY

I have no idea why they are paying Pope $5.5m/year. should have paid him less and put remainder toward NIL

To give credit where it is due, I think that Dan's thoughtful monitoring of the Loyalty forum has much to do with its relative civility. Plus, at heart, we share a common bond in our love of the Orange and blue. Ultimately, we are the "every day guys" (and girls!) of all of the "elite" fan forums!
That common bond doesn't serve Illini Inquirer very well. I used to follow that board too, but not anymore.
