Elite 8 to this. We are an utter mess and IU and MI who were both in the dumpster have more momentum than us. WTH. This is on Brad!!! I will hold out hope but you just ran off an Illini favorite and his recruits. I’m sad regardless how this turns out.

Looks sketchy right now even with Boswell but let’s see what happens.

Boswell
Goode
Rodgers
White
Morez

(Jaktys, Davis, Moretti, DGL)…ugh

If Boswell is a pro, and Morez is great, could be good. Really need a 2 guard that can create off the bounce and score

I think it's pretty clear what happened. Brad is looking to bring in Booth or other big men that along with Morez would probably relegate Amani to the bench. Amani is another one of Chester's guys that would thus be sidelined/pushed out the last couple years and Chet said "Eff it" and took another job.

Amani will probably soon announce he's transferring to WVU as well.
Yep, someone mentioned this indirectly days ago. Basically said one of the assistants was not happy his recruit was being recruited over.

Are we really saying Yaklich wouldn’t be a huge get? After having a really bad defensive season..? I love you guys in here but the takes are crazy.

Fletch & Yaklich can turn the athletes we get into a top 10, maybe top 5 defense nationally….

If OA actually is still an option… I’m making him say no, then prioritizing Yaklich.

Losing Chet stinks but if we want to continue to be an elite program we have to be prepared & aggresive.

I find it a bit weird that assistants get upset if "their" recruits get recruited over. Seems un-EDG, not team oriented, selfish, etc.
I mean, you gotta understand these guys build relationships with these kids from a young age and want to see them succeed no matter what. They even stay in touch if they choose not to come to Illinois a lot of the time.

This is the 1st or 2nd inning of the off season. No one forfeits after 2 innings! We are better than that! We will pull ourselves up by the boostraps and continue to fight! (Someone play “eye of the tiger”)

OA was an absolute train wreck as a head coach, multiple magnitudes worse than Yaklich at UIC. The difference is OA was a mega recruiter with many years of proven success getting top talent. That skill was still going to be extremely useful as an assistant when he imploded at USF. Yaklich requires more squinting because he was at Illinois State for a while before their defense popped and a two-year spurt at UM. Yaklich is likely a hotter coaching candidate if his UIC teams were <100 for defensive efficiency after he took over but still stunk.
Thanks for the history lesson. Maybe neither AO or Yaklich was ready for head coach during this first attempt but both bring different skills if they join Illinois. And their skills would be in high demand. Confident underwood finds a suitable replacement for Chester. While this board will make it a big deal - I see this coaching change to be a relatively insignificant offseason distraction.

Now real in Boswell and Booth this weekend

Agreed. Also IL could be in the mix for guys that pull out of the draft in May like TSJ/Mayer from a couple years ago. It’s still early. No reason to panic until mid June.

Maybe we get a miracle with Domask waiver too.

I hear ya, but players getting recruited over is part of the deal, and bolting to a place where there are no guarantees that it won't happen again seems a bit silly.

Maybe there's more to it, or Occum's Razor: more doughski.

Btw, I loved Chester as a player and coach.

What I can find:

He goes 214-173 coaching high school basketball (.553)

Gets hired at Illinois State as an assistant (went to school with Muller)
His last year at ISU is their 28-7 season

He gets hired at Michigan, has great two year run with JB. Is lead recruiter for one guy (4*, transferred after one year). Isn't retained by Howard.

Hired at Texas for COVID season (Shaka's penultimate season), ends up a slightly disappointing year for Longhorns but likely would have made the tournament

Gets the UIC head job but they are really bad under his tenure. Is fired after this season and leaves with second worst winning percentage in program history.
Thanks for this. I now remember him when you posted his time at ISU. They were good and he went to Michigan and turned their defense around.

“His recruits” not very EDG. You do what’s best for the team, not your ego.

I’d imagine there is a real bond built between a recruiter and player. Any slight against your recruit especially if they are carrying the EDG mantra would likely feel like a slight also towards you. I see it as him going to bat for his guys that he likely believes earned some more opportunities and may not see eye to eye. All conjecture on my part.

1000%, just was pushing back on the previous poster saying that it seemed selfish.
