Hurley turning down Kentucky is one thing, turning down one of the top 5 coaching spots in all of sports is another.

This would pretty wild considering the timing.

I see Hurley as a college guy. More specifically northern college guy where you can find a location that fits his balls to the wall, psychotic axe to grind mind set.

I can’t see him as a southern college guy because southern culture is too slow, or a west coast college guy, because the culture is too relaxed.

I have an even harder time seeing him as a west coast nba guy. His insane work ethic would work but the management of players is completely different.

I think I read somewhere that he had aspirations of becoming an NBA head coach "for the right team".

Many years ago, coaches making the jump from college to pro had a low hit rate. Has that improved since the days of Calipari, Pitino, etc.? I guess, now that I think of it, anyone making the jump to an NBA head coach has a relatively low hit rate.

Yeah, I just think he’s an East Coast kinda dude through and through.

I feel like Hurleys do better in their natural habitat. The only Hurley’s that belong/excell on the West Coast are Surfboards IMO.

we probably don't have enough datapoints to prove or disprove this, but with NIL, transfer rules, etc., the difference in how you manage a CBB and NBA program has narrowed quite a bit, imo. It's a big reason i've cooled on college sports quite a bit. it's, at least officially, basically a pro system now.

The only difference being you can't just up and leave your pro team and any point, because you have a contract. And you've usually got your GM handling the details of roster construction. I think it's gotta be quite less time consuming to be a pro coach right now

But there is no risk for him. If he makes the jump takes the bag and bombs out he will still be highly coveted fin college ball like Pitino was.

Definitely this. If Billy Donovan for example came back to Kentucky this year he would have killed it because its definitely not the same CBB he left. It is way closer to what he's doing now.

I know of one East Coast- College to West Coast- Pros coach that had some trouble adjusting…
( Dannyboy is likely to get Carlesimoed.)

This is why I have felt that Hurley could be enticed by the NBA, but it would have been for one of the Celtics, Nets, Knicks, or 76ers.

I was actually surprised that the Nets never appeared to gauge Hurley’s interest for their job. I don’t ever remember any reporting about, which makes me think there wasn’t interest given the like of people like Woj. If I were Brooklyn, I absolutely would have made him say no a few times.

Good point. Coach K did turn down the Lakers job back in the day, but also lead Team USA for awhile…maybe he could’ve made the leap. I’m not sure Hurley’s style translates to the pros. I’d prefer he stay at UCONN because I fear they’d come for Brad if he left…feeling paranoid.

Didn't Hurley joke that the Mrs. would up and leave him if he took a job outside the northwest? Now go all the way to the west coast? I can't see it happening.

But watching him implode at the NBA would be fun to watch. He would have to totally change his approach and I don't think he's humble enough to change.

Seeing as I can't stand him, I'll help him pack for LA and watch the fun.

I read somewhere that the average lifespan of a NBA coach with a team is a year and a half. That's crazy.
