I wish Orange Crush would get a large ruler printed out so the viewers at home could verify the heights of each of our vertically challenged opposing coaches like Cronin and Izzo (if he doesn’t retire).

Haha, I entered the college basketball fandom the year Steve Alford became their coach at the turn of the century so not old enough to have seen the days of Lute Olsen at Iowa. But, basically, Izzo is the eldest of the elder statesmen and then I believe it's Painter and Fran right after that. It feels like there's a new guard now in the B10. Soon enough, Underwood will be the 3rd longest tenured coach in the B10
This is my sentiment. I thought Fran made the perfect villain because 1) Iowa (duh!), 2) Comical outrage and 3) not actually a bad dude. As another poster said, he's perfect for sport hating. If I saw him in person I'd feel zero animosity towards him, because it's purely sport-hate, for entertainment value.

Through my previous work doing high school basketball play by play, I have quite a few connections with coaches in the state of Iowa. To a man, they all love Fran. They say he's actually pretty mild-mannered at practices and when he's not on the sidelines during a game. There will be a lot of disappointed coaches with connections to him today. That's why my comments about Fran are a lot more "pantomime" in nature, because I believe his true nature is completely different than what we saw, say, last night.

Full disclosure, I have one finishing up at Iowa this spring. My rule is that anything Iowa-logoed must include "Dad" on it. But I've worn orange and blue far more often there, and seen multiple Iowa - Illinois games over the last few years, in both Kinnick and Carver-Hawkeye. Good times, other than the crushing defeats in Kinnick. 100% loyalty to Illinois at all times, I can assure you.
I tried to tolerate, not like, Iowa for a while for my daughter's sake. But I lost it during the Krush / Boys & Girls Club fiasco a couple years ago. Did not care for the Iowa response.
My daughter then goes on to Marquette for grad school this fall, so the Milwaukee-based Illini can yell at me too.
I remember Dr. Tom Davis at Iowa from 86-99. He had some decent teams over those years. .658 winning percentage total. In his last year, Iowa reached the Sweet 16. Then he went to Drake in 2003 for a few years. Alford was hired to replace Davis. Only Fran and Rollie Williams coached Iowa more years (15 and 14) than Davis who was there for 9. I think Ralph Miller was there from 1964-1970.

Went to Carver last year for the Illinois-Iowa game. Sat in a section with a good number of Illini fans. My oldest son wore his black Iowa sweatshirt while I went with my bright orange Nike football coaches long-sleeve shirt (the one with the block I on it). Got some fun comments from both Iowa and Illinois friends around me. My youngest was neutral - he didn't know what to think, and since he's a soccer kid he doesn't have a strong rooting interest in sports outside of that.Full disclosure, I have one finishing up at Iowa this spring. Yes, the ticket response situation was bogus from Iowa. As I've said to my son, if Iowa wants to avoid the arena being half-full of Illini fans then figure out how to draw more fans to games. He didn't disagree.
