There are also a lot of coaches who have ZERO interest in working for a female athletic director ... I am sure there are a few people who are going to run with that and that's fine ... Just stating the facts ...
I absolutely believe you, it's just wild that people would let that be a controlling factor in this profession with extremely lucrative and winning-is-everything jobs.

Especially now where that AD's job first second and third is to make NIL money rain on the programs.

I absolutely agree Groce has probably improved in many ways as a coach. But the idea that he was a good x's and o's coach during his tenure at Illinois has been repeated a number of times and is entirely a reflection of common criticisms against our current coach. The perception of Groce during his tenure was absolutely not that he was a good x's and o's coach.
If i insinuated any sort of correlation between Groce and Underwood, my apologies. That's not what I meant.

As much as possible, I make every effort to separate coaches and their strengths and weaknesses. Hopefully, over time I've shown I am as fair as I can possibly be about the positive and negatives of all of our coaches. Groce was not a great X-O coach when he was at Illinois. From what I've seen in the games where I've watched Akron, he's been a lot better. But I would absolutely say he was NOT ready to be a Big Ten head coach either in recruiting or on-floor coaching when he was here.

Im not saying it’s a bad hire, but I can’t imagine it excites the IU fan base all that much. Not the typical IU hire.

That being said, maybe it’s a good thing.

IU update ...

DeVries met with Wren Baker today ... You can guess what that was about ... Wren Baker's response was to make a call to Logan, Utah and Des Moines, Iowa ...

Dolson has told all the players to hold off on entering the portal until they announce the new coach ... Players are being told this announcement should be coming shortly ...
I can’t think of how anyone could have a better insider source than we do. This is top tier knowledge we get right before the news drops. Thanks Indy!

I like to imagine there is a number of sports media figures that lurk here sifting through our goofy puns, .gif's, scalding hot takes, and random references to cottage cheese, etc.......just to find our Loyalty Insider™ posts so they can then "break" the stories.

This isn't the be-all, end-all of "X's and O's" of course (the colloquial division of college coaching into exactly two jobs, X's and O's and recruiting was always pretty much just nonsense), but I think it's reflective of the problems of Groce's time here:

KenPom Offensive Efficiency:
[Groce hired]
2012-13: 46th
2013-14: 146th
2014-15: 91st
2015-16: 142nd
2016-17: 123rd
[Underwood hired]
2017-18: 86th
2018-19: 83rd
2019-20: 38th
2020-21: 8th
2021-22: 30th
2022-23: 68th
2023-24: 3rd
2024-25: 15th

The lack of a star lead guard to initiate offense didn't help, but there were some very good scorers on those Groce teams and for his entire tenure we just did not get them into positions where the game could be easy for them, every last bucket was a struggle, even during a period when the Big Ten was opening up offense-wise. All the best coaches of that era jammed us up with ease.

And then even with bad teams and overmatched players, with overall tactics that led those first two Underwood teams to be the most dunked-on basketball teams I've ever seen in my life, there was an immediate drumbeat of little set plays and out of bounds plays and ideas to get easy buckets, things that fit our players strengths and broke down opponents.

It's a much less system-development focused sport now and a lot of years later, and Groce's success at Akron is very impressive, I'm sure he views himself as someone that has learned new tricks and I'm sure he's right to some extent. But he was a disaster of an "X's and O's" coach here, a sore thumb in the conference, and if I were a major conference AD I would look at his resume with considerable skepticism.

Chester has never been a HC …

It’s be similar to what Purdue did with hiring Walters …
Curious if you think Ben Johnson was a better coach back when Minny hired him than Chester is today? He had no HC experience — just an additional 3 years as an AC it looks like. I know he just got fired, but seems like people think that had more to do with his circumstance and the program rather than his shortcomings.

I think Ben wasn’t set up for success at Minnesota … And if he was … They’d have won a LOT of games this year and retained their roster …

Good coach … Poverty Program …

Chester is going to get an interview to be the HC at WVU … Wren has respect for him …

I do not expect him to end up on staff at Indiana at this point … He’d like to get the WVU job and if not that, he’s got other options on the table as well …
I sent him a DM thru IG saying he better not be wearing any candy pants....don't really expect a reply
