Season’s over, so can we finally tell the truth? We had a team with top 10 talent, in addition to the top ten coach salary and the facilities. Our “superior” offense is the result of talent, and the jacking up of open 3s with occasional pick-n-roll. Offensively we were bum slayers, destroying less talented teams on most occasions, but still getting knocked off by lesser talent when the jacking up 3s approach didn’t work. Those who think that the nepo coach did a great job with the offense are delusional.

Defensively we didn’t guard anyone all year.

This was a team with final four talent that was coached to a first weekend exit, once again not outperforming our seed. 9 for 32 from 3 is about what we are. That’s great if you are happy with an annual quick appearance in the Tourney.

Don’t be surprised as our best or second best future piece (MJ) walks, because he was horribly underutilized all year.

Texas just took away our best future option, so let’s hope that Josh at least compels multiple staff changes.
No one outside of this fan base believes that.

Pre-season 26 in the AP poll. Pre-season 23 in KenPom.

Finished the season 17 in KenPom, 6 spots higher than where we started.

You must love mediocrity
His tenure has been better than mediocre, though. The Tournament isn’t the only aspect of success, and even then we were in the Elite Eight literally last season. There will be more pressure next year if we can retain the core, but it would take two years of worse ones than this year to rightfully get him fired, IMO.

And I don’t “love mediocrity.”

My bar is S16. The tournament is the only criteria that determines if we have a successful season or not. Coaches at this level are paid to make deep runs in March. Brad is a top 10 paid coach. He needs to get results and losing in the round of 32 is not what he is paid to do. But he needs the right players who will buy into what we are doing and coaches to put the players in the best position to win.

One second weekend in 8 years is less than mediocre. 1 big 10 regular season title and 2 conference tourney titles help bring it up back up but let’s not act like we’ve had some crazy success. Considering how much we love to throw around the stat of us having the most Big10 wins in the last 5 or 6 years it’s actually embarrassing we only have 1 title to show for it. NCAAT results are more meaningful than regular season and we just haven’t had any consistent success on that front.

oh cool we had a #1 seed. Let’s celebrate! How did that end? Now you’re counting titles we didn’t actually get in 2021? Again who cares about NCAAT appearances. That should be the floor, not the bar for success.

I wanna see Illinois win national titles and everyone else just seems happy to be winning regular season games and making the tourney…

Insufferable response.

Since 2020, Illinois has:

- 6 NCAAT appearances
- The 2nd most wins in the B1G
- 2 Big Ten Championships (counting ‘21)
- 2 Big Ten Tournament Championships
- A 1 seed and a 3 seed
- An Elite Eight
- 3 All Americans (Ayo, Kofi

Not sure if it was covered earlier, but Charles Barkley was marginally better today at halftime than he was on Friday night. (Friday, he admitted he wasn't even watching the Illinois/Xavier game and was unable to provide any analysis.)

For today's game, his halftime commentary was very similar to other comments we've been hearing from coaches and analysts. "That Illinois defense is just awful. You can't even really call it defense."

Kenny Smith then chimed in, "There's a fundamental principle in basketball. You have to guard the man with the ball."

Both comments were in response to highlights being shown where Kentucky set high screens and then proceeded to dribble into the paint for 10 foot floaters or lobs to the Bigs for 2 foot bank shots. And I have to agree 100%!

If there were another assistant coaching vacancy beyond Tim's, how soon would we know?

Texas Tech has been to 4 S16s in the last 6 years with 3 different coach’s. But I’m glad you’re happy with the 1 we’ve had with Brad in 8 years.

I’ll ask you this. Did the men’s basketball program have a positive ROI this season?
The answer is of course no for this season. Last season we had a very positive ROI. We did not meet expectations that we wanted this year, but unless Brad leaves on his own, he will be coach next year. Period.

Considering buyout options, etc., you would need an absolute guarantee that you would get a home run hire to bring us to the final 4, and that likely doesn't exist.

Expectations will justifiably be higher for next year, after we see staff shake up. However, these calls for Brad's head after this season are illogical. Expecting staff changes is logical though.
