Illinois wants to be Elite, so let's get some good players, become a top team and do not shy away from a "risky" away game. Let's give Fran a Q1 opportunity!

Illinois vs. Penn at the Palestra in '25.

Penn vs. Illinois in Champaign in '26.
Considering Penn finished at sub-300 NET Ranking this year, this would be definition of unnecessary risk for Illini. You really want the potential of having a quad 4 away game next year? I get that they could be much better next year, but this still seems crazy to me.

There is literally no upside to this from the Illini side (only bad risk), so I will assume this is a joke. From Penn's side, they would jump on this immediately.

The only Philadelphia team I want to play on the road is Villanova. As others have said, zero upside to playing anyone else on the road right now (as fun as it would be to watch Illinois play in the Palestra).

VCU's Ryan Odom, who beat Virginia as a 16 seed with UMBC so famously, has taken over as Head Coach at Virginia.

That is the SIXTH consecutive VCU coach to leave for a high-major job, all since 2006.

Jeff Capel to Oklahoma
Anthony Grant to Alabama
Shaka Smart to Texas
Will Wade to LSU
Mike Rhoades to Penn State
Ryan Odom to Virginia

Pretty sure no school has a stepping-stone record anywhere close to that, that's extremely impressive in its way.
Drake is currently on a heater too. Last 3 coaches

Nico Medved (now at Minnesota)
Darien DeVries (now at Indiana)
Ben McCollumn (Iowa)

Illinois lead the Big10 in scoring. Offense wasn't the problem. It was on defense.
the offensive on average looked fine, the problem was consistency/variance & the offense was a big problem at too many times. We had moments of having the best offense in the country, followed by moments of not being able to score. We also made way too many turnovers that lead to runouts and made the defense look worse than it was. We also covered it some with being ferocious on the boards, lead by Morez & good rebounding across the lineup.

Assuming we keep the majority of the core players and role players, the portal needs 1-2 gamechangers. I feel like we have the supporting players all set. We really need a couple of players who will step in and take the team to a different level.

(I get it - pretty much every team is going to say this. But on the spectrum of "Ben Humrichous to Terrence Shannon Jr", the additions need to be a lot closer to TSJ. Domask would be a floor comparison for the type of impact the incoming player(s) would need to bring. Also, I understand if this post moves to the recruiting thread.)
I agree. If you're returning Boswell, White, Morez and Tomi as the core of your roster that gives you a fairly high floor imo.

Now I think you need to go get 2 guys that truly elevate the ceiling of the roster and take it from being a back end top 25 team to a top 5 team with a legitimate shot at a title. Imo, those need to be first team all b-10 caliber players at the least with ideally a guy capable of putting up an all American type season.

That would make you 6 deep then you spend on 2 more role players(maybe Sarr and a vet) and fill out the roster with some upside lottery ticket guys and go make a run.

I really like Boswell, Morez, Tomi, and White but I don't think either of those guys are a top 2 option on a national contender. It is however a great core of guys where they can be dangerous and rotate in as the third/fourth and occasionally step up and carry you when guys have bad games. I don't even really think that should be a controversial opinion either since KJ and Riley were the top 1 options this year and both are going pro, need to replace those guys.

Illinois had nice mini-run

Lon Kruger to NBA
Bill Self to Kansas

Nothing wrong with hiring great coaches, make NCAA run and have them leave for bigger jobs as long as you keep hiring great replacements. Unfortunately Weber then Groce killed the streak. Its nice that somebody else wants Brad.

Can someone catch me up on the Willard stuff? I know he said publicly there was things he believed needed to change in the athletic department. But this seems to go back and forth several times now about him to Nova. Is he leaving today? After the tournament? How do his players feel about it?
The silver lining I saw for his players is he's very starting-lineup focused and they're getting drafted or will follow him.

It was being said that Cronin wants to leave the west coast. Is MD his last chance this cycle? Or was his buyout higher than his expected value?

If Willard leaving Maryland is true and he used the "Christmas in New York" thing as a smokescreen to make Maryland look bad on his way out, it's a total d**k move and makes me not respect him even more. I realize we aren't exactly dealing with paragons of virtue in this profession on some occasions, but that move does not sit well with me at all.
He used it to buy time so his agent could pursue the Nova job. IIRC he had a new deal ready for his sig at Mland so needed something to muddy the water temporarily.

Heck yeah. I had a subwoofer in my car in the day and the beat was so punchy and satisfying to listen to.

I don't mean to pick on you as you're definitely not the only one to contradict yourself in this way, but it's as if we're saying the fan experience and player experience aren't part of the equation.
