It's one thing to be confident in JW, but another entirely to start a coaching search at this point in the cycle. Very likely a lot of the options JW had on his list have already signed elsewhere. Not to mention the impact on the roster for this upcoming season. Tomi and Boz follow BU to A&M, then what? So there goes your roster continuity, we'll be starting over again. No shot at big Z anymore. Dix and Sellers are probably out. What happens to Sarr? Not to mention that a new coach is always a question mark. Some moreso than others, but even hires that are considered home runs don't always work out. Especially when time is of the essence, as it would be with portal players making decisions. It's possible JW would be forced into making a quick decision, and may not be able to wait for his top candidates. Losing BU at this point would not be good, and nobody should be cheering for it (though a sizable portion of this board probably is).
I understand the concern and pessimism. But for me, the only coach that has moved so far that really would have excited me is McCollum. Richard Pitino and DeVries were in the "meh to reasonably excited" categories. Even for McCollum, I'm not sure how his style of play would translate for a roster geared more toward pace.

Sure, you take a big swing at Nate Oats and see what happens. The chances of him coming are really, really small, but they are zero if you don't make a call. After that, for me it's pretty simple.

If you are comfortable with history and baggage, the next call is Chris Beard. (I believe you aren't, and I respect that stance.) If you either aren't comfortable with Beard or he says no, then I genuinely believe Mark Byington at Vanderbilt is the next call. I watched Vanderbilt enough this year to be sold on him. I think he would be fantastic at Illinois with the resources we have.

But I think when all is said and done, I think A&M is going to poach Chris Beard. I think Beard would relish the idea of sticking it to Texas, and A&M has the money and the "we don't really care that much about baggage" attitude to seriously go after Beard.

Buzz has had reasonable success everywhere he has been. Just gets restless.

Marquette 6 years, 5 NCAA bids, one elite 8
VaTech 5 years, last 3 with NCAA bids (last one sweet 16)
TAM 6 years, last 3 with NCAA bids

Falls into the pretty good but not great coaching zone. The question for all of us is Brad similar level or can he break into the "great" mode ala Bill Self, Tom Izzo, Mark Few, Dan Hurley.... Consistently get to sweet 16 every year, multiple final fours and at least one NCAA champion.
Buzz seems like an incredibly high floor guy.

I always thought Brad was better than Buzz but his resume isn't all that different from Buzz.

So.... exactly how many times are they going to beat us?

So he'd essentially be Texan Basketball Wario?

I'm into it
In addition to the obvious of being long time rivals that love to throw money at problems, they had a huge blowup over baseball coaches last year.

Honestly I'd be surprised if A&M didn't push for Beard. Whether he'd go I obviously have no idea.

I find it interesting that it seems like practically common knowledge that many of the "old variables" that made a basketball job better than another school's job are somewhat null and void with how much recruiting has changed and NIL ... and yet we are still seeing things like Illinois (allegedly) fending off Texas, Maryland being able to poach from Texas A&M, an incredibly successful coach at cash-strapped Alabama complaining about a lack of resources, etc. Is this some coaches just wanting to be at a "basketball school"?? Is it SUCH a skew in devoted resources for these football-first schools? I mean, I would think A&M could spend an ungodly amount on football and still have plenty of cash left over to stop Maryland (who allegedly was incredibly behind financially during Willard's tenure) from taking their coach if they really wanted to ... right??

I thought last offseason seemed like a death to the old order of basketball job hierarchies with how whacky the moves were, and this offseason seems so much more 1990s, haha.

The Underwood buzz for other jobs every year comes from his agent, not from over-reacting fans. FYI.
But is it a Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State situation or a Dan Mullen at Mississippi State situation?

Constant low-level rumbles that everybody eventually ignores, or the laser-focus on the exit door of a coach who really does want to find his next step and eventually tars the relationship with his existing school.

I'm making my decision for good when this A&M job closes, I encourage others to join me.

Not a face off …

Brad’s people do their job and listen to offers on Brad’s behalf … A&M will talk to them as they should … Brad’s a great candidate for them and would be a home run …

Brad’s people will use it as leverage to try and get him an extension and a raise …

It’s simple business …
And if his people did not do that, they would be fired. Never heard of a good agent that was not trying to maximize their client's pay.

Can we possibly interest A&M in the dynamic duo of Underwood** and Hamer?

If Maryland is able to poach Buzz, doesn't that mean A&M couldn't compete with them on money and if so, how do they compete with us?

1. Bonus thing with Beard, Texas Tech don't like Aggie either.
2. The entire Schlossnagle thing will make all Aggie moves much more interesting
3. As for Brad, they are programs where he think he can titles with. However with A&M, if Brad goes there it becomes an immediate "bullet dodged" situation.
