I think people underrated Weber's recruiting. He may not have gotten the top 10 guys, but the amount of top 100 talent he brought in that he couldn't consistently win with.... idk why people overlook that. We were consistently top 25 to top 15 in recruiting rankings. I like Bruce, but that speaks to either his developmental skills, coaching, or ability to get through to his guys. I thought he was always too nice to handle the bigger personalities like McCamey or Jeremy Richardson. He had so much talent to work with most coaches would drool over.

Lol can we prove these two posters aren't literally Bruce Weber and Demetri McCamey?

Lmao man I wish I could ball like Demetri! Sorry for helping derail the thread but I'll always vociferously point out how bad of a coach Weber was here simply because it's easy to forget, especially how meanspirited and holier than thou his attitude got his last couple years here. Especially when he got his buddies like Izzo to defend him in the media (which ofc they all did because they loved having a buffoon at the helm of the Illinois program)

Normally I'd say all it takes is one bad hire like Weber after Underwood retires for us to fall off the mountain, but as long as we got Whitman here I ain't worried about that!

I'm a little tuned in here and there with KSU message board fodder and there was a sizeable contingent that really wanted Grant McCasland once they knew Bubbles was gonna be forced out (ofc a lot of them wanted to try and poach Brad with cattle breeder money as well at them time).

He would've been a good fit for KSU I think

interesting perspective given that he was also the head coach of our best team ever

People love to crap on Bruce. The truth is he’s a good basketball coach and mind, but an average recruiter at best. He lost the locker room in multiple years and rode the National Championship season success about 4 years too long.

It also doesn’t help that he came after an absolute murderers row of coaches here—Henson, Kruger, then Self would make 99% of the coaching pool look incompetent if they had to follow that up. Bruce > Groce too, for whatever that’s worth.

Speaking of Groce… I wonder if it’s time for him to jump up out of the MAC again. I think he would do well at an A10 or AAC school.

Lou rebuilt our program from nothing
1984 elite 8 and B10 champs, 1989 Final Four

Lon quick fix
1998 B10 champs. NCAA 2 of 3 years, great recruiting

Bill Self took us to next level
2001 B10 champs Elite 8, 2002 B10 champ sweet 16, NCAA every year

Bruce Weber
2004 B10 champs sweet16, 2005 B10 champs NCAA finals then 6 years of decline

Groce -arghhh

Underwood
2021 BTT champs #1 seed, 2022 B10 champs, 2023 elite 8, trending upward

Bruce was a very good coach, but not a great recruiter. He didn't have a great grasp on new age recruiting, which was....make promises and deal with the rest later. Bruce came from the Gene Keady school where you don't start unless you earn it and you make it known upfront. That's fine, in practice, just read the room. You don't take that stance with Derrick Rose and his brother when they gave a visit.

He just lost out on some big names. Kansas ate his lunch a couple of times. Sherron Collins, to me, was the most notable because Derrick Rose was never coming here.

The IDKWTI situation was really the beginning of the end. He had a golden opportunity to build on a magical season from a recruiting standpoint and just didn't.

I do find it ironic that Bruce Weber is widely regarded as a weak recruiter while at the same time tang’s early success is widely attributed to the roster he inherited at ksu.

Just an interesting observation…try not to point the pitchforks at me! 🙃

Pretty sure Tang's team was almost entirely transfers. Think only 2 returning players that saw significant minutes. But the little guy that went crazy and dragged them to victories was a Weber guy.

The amount of in-state talent during those years was incredible. If Bill Self stayed...😔😔😔

Bruce was a really good coach but he wasn't meant for recruiting during the bag man era. That's not a knock, either. He has integrity. Bret ran into similar issues in Arkansas and I think the world of him as well.

My personal opinion is that Groce’s ceiling would be SLU if Schertz leaves.

What has Underwood done to show he is going to lead us to the national title let alone the final 4. All I see is regular season success and then a whole lot disappointment come tourney time.

Getting absolutely outcoached by Porter Moser where we never lead as a #1 seed in 2nd rd

Being a missed block away from losing to Chattanooga , then getting handled by Houston

Not showing up vs Arkansas

Finally getting to the elite 8 then giving up a 30-0 run

Losing to Kentucky where we led for 26 seconds?
This feels like a comment pulled straight out of the Nebby postgame thread 2 months ago lol.

What's a "Weber Guy?"
