Coaching Carousel (Basketball)

#3
In the previous carousel thread, Oracle21 asked how many prior NBA champ coaches later coached college basketball. Two guys immediately come to mind:

Larry Brown coached at SMU after he was done with the NBA and did pretty well over 3+ years. He had a ton of prior college experience, winning a Natty at Kansas and going to a FF at UCLA.

Paul Westhead had notable success at Loyola Maramount with that famous Elite 8 run after winning a title with the Lakers (and then washing out as coach of the Bulls). He also had prior college experience at LaSalle with multiple conference titles and NCAA appearances. He later won a WNBA title with Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury.

AO making a nice chunk of change here, Josh will renegotiate if need be to keep him. He seems very happy here. The only one I would see leaving would be Tyler and at this point, that is a stretch unless SFA opens. I think the staff stays intact this year. Another run to the FF with a similar path on offense and things might change.

John Kundla, 5-time champion with George Mikan's Minnesota Lakers, resigned rather than move to LA with the team and became the University of Minnesota's coach.

I thought Malone was pretty good in his press conference. With NIL and the differences in recruiting now vs only long game recruiting high school kids in the past, it seems like there is a better chance of something like this working.

The thing with the Malone hire is that it is a helluva time to take an outside-the-box swing. The ceiling for UNC BB is obviously crazy high but the floor for ACC basketball is getting lower by the day.
Yes - with all the conference shuffling you wonder if in a few years the ACC hoops first programs (Duke, UNC, Virginia, Syracuse) become a team without a home. As popular as basketball is it pales in comparison to the money generated on the football side of the equation. And none of those schools really emphasize football historically. They've had their moments but nothing screams football school about any of them.

Maybe we can then poach Michigan assistant coach Michael Boyton? I was disappointed Illinois did not try harder in getting Lendeborg last year considering both Lendeborg and & Antigua have Dominican background. Maybe though Orlando & Brad told Lendeborg he was ready for the NBA and to go pro.

Only fair to raid Michigan after Morez J and now our QB.

My guess is we couldn't afford him. Michigan was clearly throwing around much more money than we were. Sounds like our boosters are quite motivated this year, though.

Kim English has a change of heart. Will not be joining Mike Malone's coaching staff at UNC.
