Coaching Carousel (Basketball)

If a coach leaves in the next few weeks, do players who have signed have the ability to hit the market?

I read they have a 15 day window to enter the transfer portal, starting 5 days after the next coach is hired. If the next coach isn't hired within a certain amount of time, the portal opens but I'm not sure the exact timing of that one.

Unfortunately, no one will come to Charleston to build that program for cheap. It’s a tough job to build that program at this time. Probably lucky to keep Marty.

It would have been simpler to just say "I'm waiting until after the NBA season is over" to see if my dream job opens up. And barring that, my advisors tell me I can use that process as leverage to extract better terms..

Either way, can't be real comforting to Michigan administrators, fans or recruits... 🤷‍♂️
I like that they have to squirm until the NBA season is over.

Otzelbergerhas agreed to a new contract that will keep him leading the Cyclone program through June 30, 2036 and increase his salary to $6 million annually, Endowed Cyclone Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard announced today.>>>

If the donation was larger, they could have started the last clause differently ...

If I am Dusty May
- class organization like Warriors even if they are in rebuild - YES
- train wreck like the Bulls - NO

Is that an acceptable descriptive term now? Can we all start using that in front of our names? Asking for a friend.

NBA is an easier gig in some ways, particularly that you get an off-season... but the difference a good coach can make is diminished, and you have a lot less control over the level of talent at your disposal.

Seats get hot in a hurry.

Mike Malone went from NBA champion to unemployed in about 20 months..

If you are in a position like May, top notch resources, coming off a NC, a great roster ready to go... It's a lot to walk away from, depending on the numbers in that extension, which I assume would be approaching 10 million a year.

I can't think of anything

I worry about EIU...

And the thing about it is that Marty was on the last year of his contract so it's not as if his buyout would have been that huge if they decided to let him go.

The theory I've seen speculated is that the son of AD Tom Michael is an assistant on Marty's staff and that may have played a role.

This EIU talk is confusing to me. I feel like they’re are neither underachieving nor overachieving. I feel like they’re exactly what they are supposed to be.

If you bring in a new guy, he’s probably not gonna do better. He’s probably not even gonna do the same.

Why am I wrong?

Retaining him really surprised me. They need to get a younger, energetic, now assistant coach somewhere that needs a first time head coaching gig who can bring excitement as well as recruiting buzz. Just my opinion but I think it would have energized the fan base.

I understand that thought process, and if you can do that I think you absolutely do. I just don’t know if young up and comer is gonna risk his career on Eastern

I don't know if a young energetic assistant coach would necessarily be the best option. It wouldn't be the worst thing thing to get a head coach on the younger side, even if it's not at the D-I level. When they hired Jay Spoonhour, he was 41. Marty was 57 when he was hired. I'd be fine with going the route of a Jay Spoonhour type of coach to replace Marty.
