I’ve always wondered what took so long to figure out how much easier it would have been to cut the bottom out of the basket. According to AI James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, first used peach baskets in 1891. And they started to cut the bottoms in 1906. It took 15 years to figure out. Seems kinda like a no-brainer to me.

In 1892, I would have just asked ChatGPT of a better way and the problem would have been solved.

I think the two-year deal for Boynton makes sense for both parties. Boynton is aware he's an interim and wouldn't be in this position in a normal circumstance. UM gives Boynton more financial security but not enough to fire him after the season if it's a disappointment. Plus, they'll just give him a new, long deal if this season goes really well.

The problem is the in-between. What if Michigan, who's going to be a pre-season top-5 or 10 team, goes 22-9 (12-6) and is around a 6 or 7-seed? You cannot let Boynton go into the next season on his final year, but good luck figuring out if you want to give him a 4+ year deal with a substantially larger buyout or fire him and likely see a full roster changeover the next year.

It's not ideal but for now I don't think it'll put a dagger in the heart of the program

It is probably just 2 years so they can recruit this year. There may be a path to Boynton getting another extension after this year, but I wouldn't be surprised if they still went shopping.

This is always the problem. Stability is valuable, but is your guy the long term solution? Can you do better?

There are probably 15-20 programs with the right guy in charge who aren't making this decision. the rest of schools are.

Boynton just a bridge and a voice to keep the recruits on the roster. He will have more expectations than he ever had at OSU. Be very surprised if they end up a top 10 team at the end.
