Coaching Carousel (Football)

NFL guys typically want to get back to the NFL. It is what it is.

Makes sense, but which begs the question of why to chase those types in the first place, especially for a program that has labeled itself as a developmental program vs. spending NIL on top targets. Would seem like mass assistant turnover doesn't align with develop players over several years

i don't know what kind of mike ditka/buddy ryan thing happened between walters and bielema but it clearly lingered through this past season. i guess all we can hope for is that all the fallout from that is over and everyone likes each other.

We didn’t chase anyone…we had a need for an OLB coach and Bullen is a dang good one and he was available and interested. Look at how long assistants stay at one spot….its not very long unless you’re a top guy. So you get a good OLB for one or two years great. You’ll also see a lot more “college” guys trying to go to the NFL as well. Also Charlie has a young family and it’s a lot easier to get time with them in the NFL vs college.

Might be a tipping point for me.

Cue the eye roll emojis, the "Bret knows what he's doing", the "you want your coaches in demand, it shows you're a good program"...but this is an awful lot of outward movement in a short period of time. Right now it feels like the same old Illinois football stepping stone.
- one guy went to the NFL
- one guy went for a clear upgrade in his role
- one guy was a bad hire and had to be replaced
- one guy was probably let go by mistake, although outside of our insiders none of us know the full story

I don't know what to tell you - 1) if you hire good people, you have to expect to see them leave for better opportunities at some point, that is a positive and not a negative. 2) Sometimes you make mistakes. It's not the end of the world and BB has shown the ability to bring in good coaching talent

You seem to be rational here rather than a panicky little whatever. Hmmmm. Strange 🤪🤪
