If Belichick only had to worry about building a team with the exact same resources as every other team and managing the X’s and O’s I think this could work. But I just can’t see a guy of his age, stature and personality type doing all of the recruiting, marketing, glad handing of donors etc that is required for a modern day P4 football coach.

In the NIL world I don’t think college and the pros have ever been more different. Lovie had the same shortcomings and didn’t adapt. Maybe Belichick will. But given his age I would bet against it.

This could be a hire that will get the AD fired in a few years.

The way in which they're more similar, and what I assume UNC is thinking, is that NIL makes the relationship between a school and singing players more impersonal and professionalized, and so coaches have theoretical access to a broader universe of players and can target specific attributes at specific positions.

Then IN THEORY having Bill Belichick's great scouting ability from the NFL can make all the difference.

I just don't think there's very much evidence Bill Belichick is going to have some massive advantage scouting teenagers in 2025 versus seasoned college football coaches, and then there come all the other problems.

I am going to be a contrarian of this... this will work

1. He's 73- You know, most of coaching hires are short term anyway
2. This is like Lovie- Two problems with this. First, even if you Lovie might be overhated as an NFL HC, he is still light years from Belichick. Second, I can counter Lovie with Pete Carroll who was extra iffy pre-USC.
3. How will relate to teenagers- First he is competing with his buddy Saban for the best football coach in their entire lifetimes. Two, it is the NIL era, there will plenty of boosters than will donate to Belichick war chest.
4. How will adapt to college game- Just look at pre-2007 Patriots and the 2007 era Patriots, the man is willing to adapt. Plus having Saban as a buddy is plus for the conversations alone.
Bonus reason: Belichick only won because of Spygate- It is not like an outstanding academic institution like UNC have any cheating scandals......

All Belichick has to do to be a success is to make a playoff or two in a conference whose schools are led by hyper-traditionalist Dabo, tactically idiotic Mario Cristobal, and noveau riche SMU.

Belichick is one of the greatest football coaches to ever live, but he was also pretty clearly no longer his best like 3-4 years ago, particularly as it pertained to accurately valuing his own talent and hiring and managing quality assistants.

The ruthless scouting genius who always knew when to jettison an overpaid star for a new draft pick and who surrounded himself with assistants in his own image was a long, long time ago.

Forgot two thing

4... and Florida State

Also if UNC gets into the SEC or B1G partly because of him, he is worth it. Knowing ESPN's myopia, they maybe dumb enough to pay for UNC's buyout to the SEC out of their own pockets.

SEC and B1G aren't going to add UNC based on who their coach is, particularly a coach who would be well into his 70s before they could even join. If they are getting in, they were getting in anyway. If they weren't, they still aren't.

Unless you mean he's some transcendent attorney who can get the Courts to invalidate the ACC GoR.

And with the GoR there is "buyout."

You have to have enough money to buy the roster.....but you still have to be able to recruit and retain players
That’s the hold up on the deal. Belichick gave the UNC admin a 400 page bible of what it would take to succeed at the highest level, including a number of NIL numbers. The UNC admin has been trying to get their NIL group Old Well to substantially increase their commitment to football approaching $20 m a year—big boy numbers. This is the hold up from what I’m hearing/reading. He’s gonna run this like an NFL minor league team.

He’s going to have a GM and a whole staff of recruiters. He’s not going to be flying all over the country and going to the family rooms of recruits. Just like Deion hasn’t been doing. Get them on campus and he’ll coach them up. There will be 3 Belichicks on staff I’m told.

One might argue that scouting teenagers is one of his strongest traits. Exhibit A:

Confirmation. BTW if you are hiring Belichick, t's will be crossed..

What no one has mentioned that as a future HOF coach and arguably the greatest NFL coach of all time is the simple statement he can make that no one can argue against -

"Son, I've been to 12 (9 as head coach) Super Bowls and won 6 of them. I know what it takes to get into the NFL and I can show you how if you're willing to put the work in."

Yup, long time Pats fan (back to the '70's) as I was raised in New England.

I can explain how unwilling he is to adapt with a 400 page document that I've never even seen.
