Never mind that he created100% of the "adversity that we had at Purdue."

Anyway, it appears that he indeed never changed and stayed consistent with who he was.

That Caca dude is lacking a lot of data RE Walters.
He should join loyalty, we can fill him in on the dirty details.
Speaking of Walters, is he going to take Kane with him?

I am also not aware of the strong dislike for Walters. I did read the article about Hudson Card. Any other insight? It seems like I'm missing quite a bit. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What you'll learn from message boards is unlikely to be helpful. That's how I grew convinced Bret was a drunken frat boy when we hired him. It wasn't good info, is my point. But Walters is persona-non-grata with Bret, now.

Given that Bret has built his career on long-term relationships, whatever happened must have been bad.

Well, this past year he let his team out from halftime to run through our band with the block I in formation. He knows that was 1000% disrespect. He has earned every bit of hate he gets.

im not an insider , so I don’t know the true story behind the story

but more than one insider on here has alluded to a number of things that Walters’ has done since leaving that really upset Bret and staff

I can’t share specifics because I don’t know them . i just trust they are telling the truth .

given the public facts about Walter’s carrying on an affair with an office gal , it begins to add up .
Cheat on your wife , cheat on life .

"The guy really had to fight through a lot of adversity and stayed true to who he is. I'm really proud of him. I mean, he did cause all the issues that he had to fight through, and he remained a complete classless asshat through it all. But you know, a really to notch job of starting a fire and then putting it out, all while yelling at everyone that they suck and not accepting any blame."

Which of our Assistants is most likely to depart this off-season?

One might think they'd all "want" to stay with the strong likelihood of even more success in 2025. January 2026 would then be a good jumping off point for those with aspirations of bigger roles.

After the Schefter report this morning, I have some concerns that Bret will get SEC interviews (if Sarkesian leaves for NFL) as well as one very specific NFL team showing enough interest to warrant an interview for an open HC position. Why wouldn’t Bret parlay this sustained success at Illinois into an NFL HC job or a top tier SEC job?

He’s already tried that

SEC jobs are overrated and aren't what it's cracked to be. High expectations = lower job security. Arkansas is a bottom feeder team (and this was even before Texas/Oklahoma joined - bottom 3 in SEC wins over 25 years) that Bret took to 3 straight bowl games and still fired him.

Yeah now that everyone is on the same page of paying players I don't see a big difference between SEC and B1G. I could see maybe going NFL route where the off-season grind is less intense and he could spend more time with his family while collecting a similar salary.

However I think Brett is here for the long haul, he can't leave for another B1G school very easily, he's done the SEC thing, and I don't see the NFL trying to poach him because he's not running any sort of fad offense or defense that a GM/owner thinks will give them an edge. He's just a highly competent organized coach.

I just don’t see it. Bielema would be a “leader of men” type of hire, and I don’t see a NFL team looking at him and saying “that’s my guy”. I also don’t see any way he wants to return to the SEC.

I’ll never say never, but I’d be extremely surprised if either happens.

Great observation! We’re seeing the SEC in decline relative to B1G in head-to-head performance on the field. Their already intense fan base will become even less patient with results that don’t match their increasingly unrealistic expectations.

Does the SEC sound like an attractive career move, a place to settle in and raise your family as kids start school, somewhere where you’ll find job satisfaction and appreciation for your work? He has those things, along with a competitive salary, right here. Why leap into the SEC with increasing turmoil ahead as its prestige is challenged? Better to be one of the rising B1G challengers than hopping on one of the defending SEC hot seats.

Appreciate the feedback on this Black Monday morning. Would seem like he has ties to 3 of the openings, not counting Chicago: Giants, Jags, and Patriots. There may be butterfly-effects on the carousel this year, assuming one shock hire out of the SEC/B10 into the NFL occurs. Here’s hoping Bret and Whitman are here for many, many years to come and that the new Chancellor makes this happen asap.

Big 10 Head Coach Salaries 2024. Bret was 7th. These are base salaries only.

$10.3M R. Day
$ 8.5M J. Franklin
$ 7.6M L. Fickell
$ 7.5M J. Fisch
$ 7.4M K. Ferentz
$ 6.6M D. Lanning
$ 6.5M B. Bielema
$ 6.0M J. Smith
$ 6.0M P. Fleck
$ 6.0M S. Moore
And then the others.......

I don't believe the private schools were reported. Whitman will ensure we're always taking care of BB. Back-to-back Top 5 conference finishes, and we may need to ensure he's paid like a Top 5 coach.

For those living in/around Champaign County, how does $6.5M per year play? Able to buy groceries and go on one nice vacation every year?
