He also introduced nepotism, a violation of State law and the beginning of a possible stain on the program’s culture. Hire only the best please. Be a role model by avoiding even the appearance of corruption. Nepotism is unprofessional and the opposite of integrity. Look the damage to Iowa’s performance and reputation when daddy refused to fire his son, another reason you never hire family. It makes dealing with poor performance difficult.

Are you attacking our basketball program?

Not at all familiar with it, but if the shoe fits . . . The principles are valid in every organization, public, private, whatever. Nepotism has a corrosive effect on organizational culture, integrity, morale, and performance.

Lovie’s nepotism stemmed from getting tired of the college grind. At the end of his tenure, instead of finding legit, competent position coaches…he just gave his son carte blanche. When that happened, pretty much everyone knew his time was done.

Lol...A fun review of a few celeb encounters over the years!?

Jim Brown....on my flight ORD-CLE...I saw him with his handler in the gate area and approached them to ask if he'd like to board early so he doesn't have to stand in the gate area. Coordinated with the gate agent and escorted him down the jet bridge. Very...very.... cool moment...very gracious and chatted about all the great RB's. Legend.

Steve Garvey....a little full of himself but serious forearms confirmed.

Eva Longoria...hoodie pulled over face didn't interact with anyone.

Speaker Paul Ryan....freaked me out in AUS when 3 black SUV's pull up to the plane and armed dudes come on the plane to search/inform us. He came on with his family was super nice and sat in economy with his wife and kids. Interacted with everyone.

Rev Jesse Jackson...boarded early with his handler...forward flight attendant was a brand new young black female who wanted a picture with him. He obliged, put his arm around her...and his hand dropped straight to her butt. I'll never forget her eyes/expression looking right at me like "OMFG WHAT DO I DO?"
Maybe he was blessing her behind? 😝

Kate Upton...hilariously the flight attendants failed to notify me, and the final passenger report had her name changed (many celebs do this travelling publicly)
so I was unaware of her being on board until she walked off the plane in IAH. I immediately "fired" the flight attendant for not telling me...and I now jokingly include "required supermodel notification" during my pre flight briefings....

Rick Barnes....great guy...got a selfie since my (late) brother was a huge Vols fan

Mike Wolfe from American Pickers....just a very quick hello

Also Danielle from same show...she was very cool and chatted about show.

Several others with no interaction as well as just spotted at airports errrwhere here and there.
My craziest celebrity encounter on a plane was on a British Airways flight from London to Tanzania late December 2000. We're sitting toward the front up in the little 2nd floor bubble of a 747. During a meal service there was an agitated guy few rows back kind of muttering to himself and pacing the aisle. Suddenly, he rushes the toward the cockpit, gets the door open, pushes a pilot, and the plane starts rapidly losing altitude; food and trays flying everywhere. A guy in the first row gets up runs to the cockpit and pulls the crazy guy out and subdues him. It's Bryan Ferry. Lead singer of Roxy Music for the kiddos on here.

IMO, images of The Chief should only be used in honorable ways. No schtick either directly or by association.
Then he probably shouldn’t have done a rain dance at halftime then. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Passed by Rod Stewart at Hartsfield some years back. He was in a hurry so I just nodded and didn't bother him. It was difficult though. Big Rod Stewart fan. "Hot Legs" is one of the greatest rockers of all time.

He and Dylan are the living embodiments of dudes that made millions (billions?) without being able to sing a lick. GREAT entertainer (Stewart) and HOF songwriter, but horrible singers.

A Few More Brushes with Greatness, prior to today's tip-off:

* Sam Elliot and Katherine Ross (KR most definitely has NEVER had plastic surgery)
* Gary Coleman (shorter than he appeared on TV)
* Tony Bennett (appeared to be 110 years old)
* Annie Potts (back in her Designing Women days)
* Willie McCovey (and a 30 year old modelesque 5'4 blonde; in the buffet lunch line on the Big Island of Hawaii)
* Lou Brock (at urinal next to me in ATL airport; we did not talk)
* Woody Paige --- ATL airport, again (Woody, of Around the Horn fame)
* Nick Cannon -- Newark airport
* Steve Jobs -- snooty; disrespectful to hotel staff
* Steven Collins (after his Star Trek movie; before he got into big trouble)
* Jay Bilas (at my son's HS basketball game; then again at the PGA --- Pinehurst #2)
* Roy Williams and Brad Brownell (at a Zion Williamson HS basketball game in my hometown)

Two humorous ones I have had:

Sat next to Senator/movie actor Fred Thompson on a flight once (in coach!). Nice guy - chatted a bit, mostly I was impressed that he worked the whole trip. Near the end, he asked to borrow a news mag I had been reading. When I said "Keep it Senator, I'm finished with it", at the word senator the flight attendant's eyes got real big and her jaw dropped as she realized who had been on her flight.

In Vegas, at the Riviera, I rode an elevator once with Larry Holmes and his wife. It was 9:00 AM, Holmes was in a tux, and his wife henpecked the poor guy all the way down about how stupid it was that HBO had him in a tux, how he looked like and idiot, etc. When the doors opened, the heavyweight champion of the world looked down at little 5'8" me and sheepishly smiled and shrugged.

I got to hang with Brooks Robinson and Don Kessinger for the duration of an autograph signing card show in the 80s.
Both Hall Of Famers in my book. They treated me great! Both were extremely gracious with everyone. I remember Kessinger saying about a thousand times to all the Cards fans that he had a cup of coffee in St. Louis…because it happened to be overwhelmingly cardinals fans there.
My dad knew a guy that was heavily into baseball cards and collectibles. He ran the thing…and dad asked if I could assist. I was 10 or 11. Brooks was something of a role model for my dad. It was fun for both of us.

At about the same age…I saw Larry Bird. (We think?) We went to French Lick, Indiana. No hot springs…no big massive, historical hotel in West Baden that the mafia stayed at in the 20s & 30s…went to Larry’s Restaurant, his college in Terre Haute…later stopped at Assembly Hall in Bloomington (dad REALLY liked Knight) My sister wanted to go to Mall Of America. She lost that battle. Ha ha! I was about 12 and the biggest midwesterner Celts fan that ever walked. (Black Converse…Celtics Gear Head to Toe) We were at a Hardee’s in French Lick and this lady that claimed to be his Aunt Renee (who may or may not of been a con-woman?) Scrawled an address in a napkin. She told us we should drive by his place…(the one in the Converse Weapons commercial where he plays Magic…)…so they take me knowing what a fan I am. We creep by the estate a little too slowly and we hear every Bird brother, cousin and nephew scream: “Off the property, off the property!!” Crushed!
I get it. Really I do. I live in the sticks myself and I don’t like to be bothered…and I am far from famous. We shouldn’t have been there…but I still hear the screaming in my head. lol Just then…..The tallest blondest one just stands up and points: “Get” 😂

But after all that……. I managed to get not one but 3 autographed picks of Larry Bird!-that made me super 😃 happy obviously!!
Bird worked for a guy at a gas station there in in French Lick named Col. Brownie when he was a kid. He was close to Larry…and he handed out autographed photos to people on Larry’s behalf undoubtedly…I’m sure it was to keep to lunatics like my family from driving by his house. Lol

I asked (late Pistons Era) Dennis Rodman for an autograph at an exhibition game against the Clippers at Kiel. He was not rude or anything…simply said: I can’t sign it right now, bud.” I was about 13. I asked Elgin Baylor too…no dice.

Joan Jett putt on a concert for just me and a friend. 😂 it’s a hot summer day in New Berlin, Illinois…(I won’t even get into a discussion about how they pronounce Berlin) There are a grand total of 9 people in attendance. 7 bolt after a few tunes. Leaving only my friend and I drinking pitcher after pitcher of warm Miller Lite 5 feet from the stage. What a consummate professional she is. She was laughing about it. She still rocked that place like it was Shea Stadium. This was early 2000s.
It was like that good feeling you get when no one shows up for a movie…times a hundred and five.

Warren Sapp....flight from Chicago/LA. Yelled at United Airlines staff because he had to wait for first class to open.....lotta F Bombs. Finally got on board, and he was already dropping the F Bombs as us common folk passed by his highness ( er lowness) on to our seats in coach.

Bill Self: about a week before he took Kansas job.....Restroom at Biaggi ....washing hands..asked him if he was leaving for Kansas...his reply.." Oh no, I love the U of I, and the community, sense of history here." Huh?

Why has this thread devolved into a list of celebrities that people have met?

I want to hear how tOSU fans might fire Ryan Day if they don't win the national championship, because they lost to Michigan again this year.

This a U of Ill thing... Our own faculty torpedoed the chief. Thanks to the English Department!

the NCAA didn’t kill the Chief , our own admin & state leaders did

the NCAA just provided cover .

Don't feel bad. I've met no one. But, I'd probably would have no idea if I had.

Closest would be Densie Stapley. A winner from the show, Survivor. But I also had no idea until my kids told me who she was.

I hear you, but the Florida State seminals have a student dress like an Indian ride a horse into the field thrusting a spear in the air like he’s going into battle- is that less disrespectful than a rain dance? And the NCAA still allows it
That's because the FSU Seminoles pay a royalty to the Florida tribe, and they aren't biting the hand that feeds them. However, the Oklahoma tribe don't receive anything, and they aren't happy. Illinois should have made some kind of a deal with the Peoria tribe so they would have had an interest in keeping the Chief. Of course, it didn't help the Illinois cause by having the Sioux make the Chief's clothes.

Like I said, I don’t follow basketball, so have no idea who you’re talking about. And not my call!

However, you’ll struggle to find any expert on leadership who doesn’t regard nepotism as a destructive influence on organizational performance. Maybe this guy’s contributions are truly exceptional, but that’s generally not what you find. Brian Ferentz was a sports example of the problems. How do you expect someone to objectively assess/discipline (or fire) family?
