I have heard sports journalists bring his name to the table for the job if it becomes open. I agree with you as he is more a novelty than a coach.
Yeah, for one thing Deion still hasn't been able to fix Colorado's inability to stop the run since he has been the coach there. It would be interesting to see how he would fare at a school with much bigger NIL though. I just don't think Colorado will ever reach that level of NIL even with someone like Deion as the head coach.

I mean, the team he took over was #128 (out of 131 teams) in opponent rushing yard per attempt. In the 3 seasons he's been there they've been #95, #37, and #99. Yeah, not great overall (year 2 was pretty good though!) but it is an improvement.

On the offensive side, here are their yards per play rankings, with the last pre-Deion season in red:
2022: #122
2023: #97
2024: #68
2025: #50

And opponent yards per play:
2022: #130
2023: #105
2024: #17
2025: #92

I mean, wow, how bad was that 2022 team that Deion inherited? Yikes. It does appear that overall defense has been tougher to turn around than offense. But if you were the AD of a literally bottom 10 program in both defense and offense, and someone told you that you could hire a guy and he'd improve you on both sides of the ball, with significant year over year improvement on the offensive side of the ball, but more modest improvement on the defensive side, would you say no to that?

If I'm PSU's fan base, why am I excited about these frontrunners? I get the Rhule/Alum/Kraft thing, but is that really going to move the needle in State College?

If I'm a Penn State fan, I'd be ok with Matt Campbell, but that hire won't match the fan base's view of how prominent PSU is.

If I'm Kraft, I let the smoke swirl about Rhule/Fitz/Campbell....and I go silent and go talk to Al Golden and Joe Brady.

I am starting to believe it will be Rhule - which is FINE by me

I then think Nebby hires Campbell

I also think Fitz gets a job this cycle - but hes holding out for a B1G job or other decently high profile gig.
I Doubt its a B12 job
If that holds, Nebraska will finally have made a really good hire. Substance over sexy. It's what Illinois did.

I can't see Fitz getting a B1G job in his first redo but maybe someone like Maryland pulls the trigger.

That is the one worry I have with Penn State hiring Rhule, I can see Nebraska doing a lot better job in hiring Rhule's replacement than Penn State in hiring someone other than Rhule. Then again, Nebraska could hire Zac Taylor after the Bengals fire him.

if Neuheisel continues to win some of their games out there. we will be kind of hard to ignore for that job, but I had thought that Fitz might work out there .

Neuheisel is the OC. He would be an objectively very bad hire for HC. No program experience, recruiting, Rolodex of position coach/coordinator hires.

But he's a good play caller thus far.
