it is just about unprecedented for a 3 yr DC to get demoted & remain on staff as a position coach .

I can’t see how that works for AHen and any new incoming DC would be foolish to accept that,
Dan Disch did it in 2010. Went from Co-DC with Mallory to just LB coach when they brought in Koenning. Only stuck around for one more year before leaving.

so it sounds like there's not only precedent, but the case cited as precedent involved a tremendous defense.

not to overpopulate this thread with my own posts, but i had to have this in a different post:

what do we think about michigan state hiring pat fitzgerald?

the metro detroit locals are less than pleased.
Fitz has baggage, for sure, and his record the last two years in Evanston were less than okay. But he can recruit Chicago about as well as anyone and my guess is he will do much better at MSU than the previous two guys did.

That job was made for him or Kelly. I was hoping Kelly would have gotten it

Weird, but the Fitz kid that was all over the field on Saturday is not Pat's son. I was just about sure that he was.

Re Bart: I've watched Bart coach up close in practice, he's a great teacher and knows his stuff. We run a lot of zone stuff with guys who are power guys(Including Bart). You have to marry your recruiting to your scheme(which falls more on Barry and Bret imo than Bart).

I get what you are saying, but good coaches know how to adjust

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

You are correct that the blame isn't solely on Bart. Certainly, a mixture of BM/BL/BB for not ensuring we are recruiting the right type of linemen to play in the system we are currently running.

I would also argue that we just haven't seen the internal development of the individual lineman. I also don't see us going to a full-on power scheme...

At that point, I think you have to look elsewhere to find a coach who can better marry your recruiting and blocking scheme to a more modern offense.

Admittedly, that will be VERY tough. You need to wade into deeper waters to bring in those big/athletic guys needed for what we do now. That's gonna take $$ and a GREAT recruiter to do. Can BM prove that he can bring in those top 250 type recruits? I'm not sure.

Feels like a mostly Barry thing, but that's kind of how modern FB is?

Bret seems like he would still be pulling Guards every down if he could get away with it.

I’d prefer that we hire a DC who will stick around multiple seasons, and I just don’t see that with Stoops.

Weren't Bart and Bret zone scheme guys at Wisconsin? I remember watching some videos of him teaching square pull when he was first brought in and loved the way he taught, but I really think we need more development and production out of our OL.

I've always wondered if Barry and Bret are the best match. We hired Barry after we couldn't figure out his UTSA offense with a lot of motion and movement. That doesn't seem to work with Bret's idea of a ball control, smash mouth offense. I feel like Lunney has tried to find a mix of both styles and it hasn't always worked. That probably puts the OL coach in a bind as well. I figured Lunney would move on so he could run his schemes again elsewhere. Maybe I'm completely off here, but it just never seemed a good fit.

OK, so assuming that is the case, is the staff looking to focus more on recruiting oline to the scheme now?

Indy, 0440- timeline on a D-coordinator? Any way Henry gets demoted back to position coach or is he gone? I think he provided good skill coaching, just couldn't play call to save his life. Opinions???

If Bret is going to make a move … It wouldn’t be until after the bowl game IMO …

Stoops is a name … Jimmy is a name … Can we get either ?

For Bret to even consider it … It’d have to be a guy that’s going to seriously elevate us …

Couldn’t agree more … Something has to give there … Not sure what it’ll be, but something …

Agree. We need a proven guy with some recruiting chops. Gonna cost some dough if he makes the move. If he doesn't, I want him calling the D.

Would one year of Stoops be better than a replacement level coach that'll stay here three or four years?

If Stoops comes here and knocks it out of the park, he'll be a head coach again in 2027.

Fitzgerald is a little PJ Fleckish in mannerism, but no one can say he isn't at least a good solid coach. They had some downturns but in 17 years at NW he is 9 games over .500. People of an older generation like myself know how absurd that would have been to think about prior to Gary Barnett to Randy Walker to Pat Fitzgerald. He kept the program relevant most years at a place that historically hasn't been relevant very often. I would suspect he will do good at Michigan State.
