The growing collateral damage from NIL is going to make it increasingly difficult to convince NFL coaches to come to the college game.
Why wouldn't it be the opposite?

Traditionally coaches have gone to the nfl to avoid recruiting. If it's increasingly transactional then doesn't it make it an easier transition from the NFL?

I know the perfect guy for the job.

Bears OC Declan Doyle to the Ravens as a playcalling OC.

The other thing to remember is that this isn't Utah's golden child tempted east by the magical Michigan opportunity, Utah nudged him into retirement in order to have his head-coach-in-waiting take over leadership of the program. It's a pure marriage of convenience.

It really has surprised me how positively the move has been received among the CFP chattering class, the second I saw the "Whittingham to Michigan" headline I had an immediate gut "oh no what a disaster" reaction that I expected to be shared more broadly.

I think Whittingham is the closest thing they could get to Jim Harbaugh. I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t get them right back to Harbaugh’s level

I'd be shocked if he's there in 2 years.

2 of his last 3 seasons in UT would be seen as failures at UM.

Consider what he did at Utah, even the past few years. With the Michigan $$$ I, unfortunately, think he’s a great hire for UM. the right guy in right environment.

To use another car analogy, at Utah he was driving a Hyundai and still competing at a high level. At Michigan he has a Lamborghini. He can accomplish more at Michigan

Both would be good hires. I know people will crap on it but if we could get Brian Ferentz as our TE coach that would be a home run.
I mean, there was precisely one single thing Iowa was great at on offense, at that was the quality and utilization of the tight end. So if that's Ferentz, I'm all for it. Plus, anything that steals away from Iowa's TE game, I'm all for. Question will be though if he is able to recruit high quality TEs to a place who hasn't really used them as passcatchers from scratch, or whether those recruits were already attracted to Iowa because of how great the TE position has historically been there. Not saying that doesn't work hand in hand, but Ferentz doesn't strike me as the most inspiring recruiter and recruiting from the sub-basement isn't exactly the same as recruiting from the penthouse. That said, yeah, he did wonders at the TE position at Iowa and we would be very very fortunate to have him if he got us up and running there.

I get your point....I do think Whittingham is cut from a different cloth though - he isn't a RichRod for sure. In terms of style, demeanor, etc he is as close to a Big 10 coach out of central casting as you can get. 66 is not old and he still has gas in the tank. I will be shocked if he isn't highly successful.

Is it fair to say that a coach at UM has advantages that a coach at Utah doesn't?
Sure. Is it fair to say that he's facing a tougher conference, in a new recruting environment and has a rival that if he loses twice to his job will be in question?

He'll also be 68 in 2028. There's 2 active coaches 68 or older.

2008–2010New England Patriots(OQC)
2011New England Patriots (TE)
2012–2014Iowa (OL)
2015–2016Iowa (RGC/OL)
2017Iowa (OC/RB)
2018–2021Iowa (OC/TE)
2022–2023Iowa (OC/QB)
2024Maryland (OA)
2025–presentFresno State (TE)

Look at the te’s he’s coached over the years. Obviously I don’t want him calling the offense but his TE’s have had a ton of success. His resume is much better than Dischers.

Let's just put a pin in this sentiment and review this time next year.

I contend that "this guy has been at Utah since 1994" will seem clearer at that point.

please define

you mean CFP?

And there it is officially … It wasn’t a well kept secret he was looking for an out and Bret was likely looking to make a change but needed to ensure his guy landed in a good spot (shoutout Chris Ash) … Wish Aaron the best …

Hence my comment the other day about who was and more so who wasn’t out on the road …

Now Bret … Time to cook … DC, RB, TE, ST …
