To be clear ... Both of these guys were given opportunities to seek new positions elsewhere within a certain time frame or Bret was going to move on himself ...

I think it's honestly pretty incredible how much Bret's word means around the NFL and CFB that he got guys who were on the outs with us positions at CFB contending teams ... It may not have worked out here but demotions/lateral moves to other teams could work out great for them ... And that is a brilliant move for Bret because it makes it look like these teams are coming to our program to poach ...

nothing short of a masterclass by Coach B here

Oh for sure, no doubt. He did an excellent job with the TEs at Iowa. Only question I had was how his recruiting chops are, not his resume or the performance of his units. Iowa's history with TEs sells itself, here at Illinois we need to work on that. I absolutely think Ferentz can get us there though if we can bring in the commits.

He's going to be an Co DC for a team that will almost certainly be in the playoffs vs being with us, who still doesn't have a valid roster put together on that side of the ball.

For as much whining as people had about Coach D and Coach A.....the level of programs they joined are top shelf. Call it what you want, but they are both in better situations.

We next need a Cignetti-like hire where the new DC brings along 5-6 of his top former players.

Bret takes care of his guys ... He called Shad and multiple other NFL teams and Aaron immediately has interviews ... Obviously there were some conversations with Chris Ash to ensure Aaron had a spot there as well ...

Bret couldn't come to an agreement on a reduced role with Discher so he reduced his buyout and put out multiple calls to other coaches and said nothing but the best about Discher and he lands on his feet as well in a great spot ...
It’s pretty remarkable to see how far we’ve come. From lasagna man to a coach who runs the program like a CEO, but care about the guys he works with.

That’s a dude right there and one I would think people would want to work for.

It’s a win win for everyone involved.

Should add this note ...

Very shortly after the season, Bret informed Discher he was only going to be coaching ST here next year if he remained on staff and Bret would be hiring a new TE coach ... They could not come to an agreement on a few things which ultimately led to Discher seeking new opportunities ...
Was it a similar thing with Henry where he was given an option for a reduced role, or was he gonna get outright fired if he couldn’t find a landing spot?

Put yourself in his situation. Would you rather be a DC in a situation with the current personnel that we have or a Co DC for a team capable of winning a Natty this year? If that defense at ND performs, he'll either be promoted or another program will take him. ND isn't taking clowns onto their coaching staff or giving out favors. He's in a better spot now then he was a week ago.

With our current D Line, some on here will be calling for that coaches head as well. It's the "we didn't want him anyway" crowd.

Bret absolutely did not want to fire A Hen ... It was honestly not an option ...

He was going to help or just flat out call in a favor to ensure Aaron landed on his feet with a great job ... Multiple NFL jobs and multiple CFB jobs were options for Aaron ... This is the one that Aaron felt was the best opportunity for him moving forward ...

love that. do you expect a new offensive line coach ?

And there it is officially … It wasn’t a well kept secret he was looking for an out and Bret was likely looking to make a change but needed to ensure his guy landed in a good spot (shoutout Chris Ash) … Wish Aaron the best …

Hence my comment the other day about who was and more so who wasn’t out on the road …

Now Bret … Time to cook … DC, RB, TE, ST …

One thing you can say about changes whether portal, coaching staff, etc. is guys are either upgrading or being put in position. That's a positive. It's a win for all sides.

The tricky thing with AHen for a reduced role is his specialty is DB coach, which we already have (Parker).

Also tricky to have a new DC coach that Henry would now “answer” to.

Likely best to find a new program for everyone involved.

I think this is a great example of the echo chamber/reality gap in fanboards like Loyalty. Two of the board's problem children just got poached by top-tier programs, and instead of stopping to ask if we were wrong about them, we’re busy celebrating Bert’s 'brilliance.'

Similar to the "Tyler Underwood only has a job because of nepotism" discussion over the summer while he was simultaneously discovering and recruiting a future B1G POY candidate and lottery pick.
Impressive how are 'bad' coaches failed upwards to playoff teams.
