Does it?

Not sure if you have inside info, but most times that offset language includes an obligation to seek employment (duty to mitigate), removing it could mean he's happy to retire early?
I view it as if he didn't want to keep coaching why not just force them to pay the lump sum? Taking out the offset language benefits both sides and gives him the most money possible if he takes a new job.

agree 100%

hes willing to wait for the money over 5 years as he likely is just banking it anyway, and this gives him a chance to still work in the game and get paid for it

It also helps to avoid going through the legal battle that Bielema went through. Bielema did end up short when it was all said and done. So I don't know what to make of it??

In theory the duty to mitigate demands that he keep at least attempting to find work (and obviously he is objectively very marketable) but as with the Bielema-Arkansas case those are difficult and expensive questions to litigate.

Offset language looks brilliant when there's a case like James Franklin of a coach immediately jumping into another P4 HC-level job, but in general my feeling is that offset language operates as less of a benefit to schools than schools think it will when signing the deal, and they would be better off negotiating a lower but firmer number. It takes two to tango on that of course.

We are, thankfully, seeing these buyout numbers come down somewhat in new contracts, it was always insane but that's even more clear now in the NIL era. Yet another example of how the economics of college sports for decades laundered the skyrocketing value of the players anywhere else it could go.

Usually Bret already has candidate lined up. Maybe he has handshake agreement and is waiting so not as to ruin AH ND optics.

I am so impressed how Bret handled change-over, helping the coaches find new jobs and making sure they had landed before announcing replacement. Class act. Very different than when Tony Peterson OC was let go Jan 4 after 1 season.

Of course I am sure Jay likes it because possibly zero or reduced severance. Tony Peterson had 3 year contract so I assume we had to pay him 2 years severance.

I don’t know

there may be reasons he’s waiting until next week to announce other than the guy is coaching on one of those teams

If we’re awaiting until after the Super Bowl for the defensive opening my guess would be Chris Patridge. Kevin Richardson was on our staff 2 years ago but no way is he a dc candidate

Not sure if he’s the guy, but is a name I’ve heard

If so - count me in 100%. DB’s coach that’s been with Devon Witherspoon the whole time, and has been the passing game DC (whatever that means?) for one of the best defenses in the entire league. I’m all for it.
