Hearing a lot of talk around Stoops this AM …
So were these guys drinking buddies in their days at Iowa?

As someone who spent way too much time in my Illini days at Joes, O'Malley's, Gulleys, R&Rs, Cochranes not to mention Kams and COs at the same time these guys were at Iowa, and I've now 'matured' and successfully raised two college kids myself, I could totally get on board and appreciate a more mature duo like Bret and Stoops leading the Illini way past Iowa in the Big Ten pecking order. I am all for second chances. And would be all the sweeter with their Iowa roots.

Correct… his brother, Bob, did.
And his brother Mike did. And Mark and Mike were together for many years at several different schools, including when Bielema was a player at Iowa.

Brent Venables also worked with Bob and Mike at multiple different schools, but never with Mark.

That would be a home run hire - he's one of the best defensive minds in the sport and he recruited talent well at Kentucky (I don't know how much was him vs. the assistants) but what he accomplished at Kentucky ( 7 straight bowl games, two 10 win seasons)in the SEC is very much like what Bret is doing here.

His buyout doesn't have an offset clause, so anything he makes here is on top of the $37M he's going to make over the next 4 years (yes, he will be making more than Bret!)

Believe Kentucky owes him like $30 million ish after negotiations and it’s going to be paid in installments until 2031 …

It’s tough being a fired football coach …

Stoops will get paid $6.75 million per year, in quarterly installments, until April 2031, whether or not he takes another job.

I want his agent negotiating my next deal.
You do wonder a little bit what he wants with this or any assistant job, when he could do nothing or be an analyst or something and prepare for another HC job, which he might very well get if he's willing to move down a level.

Hopefully we would be able to take advantage of his unique background and skillset in the way his role is structured.

guys his age (mine) need something to do & a sense of worth - a reason to get up at 5:30am. it makes time go by so much easier

he obviously knows from people that those analyst jobs might not be all that great

my guess is he feels this is a good way to stay deeply involved in the game . he likely wants to be a head coach again and yea, he’ll likely need to step down a level to do that .

Hmmmmm.........

$37M is quite enough $$$ to retire comfortably ---- with a ski condo in Vail, a vacation home on the Big Island, a condo (primary residence) for Cubs games just off Michigan Ave, and a C/U apartment for occasional Illini games.

58 years old. Had a good run at a basketball school KY.

Still has something to prove.

Why don't we have a defensive coordinator hired yet? Does Bret know he has vacancies on his staff? It seems as if he had no plan and was caught completely off guard!

/s
Coach can always call defensive plays himself, and bring one of his offspring to coach positions, right?

His original deal was even better. Kentucky owed him a huge lump sum of the remaining contract within 30 days or so after firing but he agreed to the installments for them to remove the offset language

It was not any secret that a change was coming at DC. Everyone in the building knew this. I have no doubt Henry was encouraged to look elsewhere before being demoted. I personally do not know one person who is upset by this news. Some of us were surprised he was given such a huge responsibility of running a Big Ten defense with absolutely no experience. We needed a change years ago.
