I actually love the hire. Coach B went out and got someone who knows ball, for sure. I’m really hoping we can leverage this hire to also pull in some Montana players. I believe they have a decent sized window to enter the portal with their head coach leaving.

I think everyone may be wrong in thinking this was a pivot on Partridge. Bret said "after the Super Bowl" and implied he had been working on things. The Henry resignation went down roughly 2/1. Believe the state mandates a 7-day window for a job to be posted. 7 days is Super Bowl Sunday, no one could have been officially hired until yesterday anyway. Hauck resigns on 2/4 and says "dealing with what college football has become is not always enjoyable as a head coach … I kind of got tired of all that — dealing with agents and the transient nature of it.” Hauck gets to have a little adios in Montana without it being a running off to another job. My sense is that Bret was working on this the entire offseason. Bret wants Illinois to be a developmental school that fills in with transfers. You've got the former HC for a school that is all about developing a tough D. And Bret loves to throw everyone off the trail, his SB comment was probably just to send reporters (or fake reporters) into a tizzy.

Warner and Wagner convinced this was the first pick and all the Super Bowl comments were a "smokescreen". That seems like a major reach.
If Bret already had his guy what's the point of putting out fake clues to throw people off the scent?
Were there other schools with DC openings in February clamoring to hire a 61 year old FCS Head Coach?
Not saying this is a bad hire, but that take reeks of copium.

So, basically Partridge was gonna be the guy and why Bret said last week that he couldn't say anything until after the Super Bowl, then dude backed out after winning the thing and basically said, "Bruh, I'm a Super Bowl champ. Illinois? Lol."

That about right?

Well, if Dan can get the latency down enough, perhaps we can have the game thread do it.

Partridge was the guy all along but he pulled a 180 on Bret last second… that wasn’t cool but coach B always has backup plans on standby. This is a solid plan B in my opinion. New scheme and much more aggressive
Partridge is on record saying he was, "shocked" to be mentioned as a candidate for the DC job.
The timing of Hauks announcement stepping down coincides with BBs presser talking about scheme change last week.
He (BB), mentioned he was waiting on some waivers. Two Montana players received waivers this week.
Is this a coincidence or am is my tin foil hat too low on my brow?

I believe those 2 players from montana that received waviers were a LB and OL. I do agree it would make a ton of sense for montana kids to enter the portal (since their hc “left”) but I don’t think I will get my hopes up.

baffling hire. whether you think it's good or bad, it's baffling. demonstrates a lot of confidence in the ability of the rest of the staff to recruit.

we're either gonna see a lot of defensive starters come in the transfer portal or we're gonna see a lot of points get scored on the illini
we still have at least 2 openings on the coaching staff . I will assume for now both will be filled with guys who are good recruiters .

with the new rules for who can be recruiting off campus & who can be on the practice field , who does what is not what it used to be .

Im not trying to be negative but severely unchecked with this hire. This guy has no interest in recruiting is reversed more as offensive guy from everything ive read and could find on him.idk if we weren't willing to spend what was necessary for a upgrade to ahen or if we waited to late to start looking but I cant see how this can be looked at in any other way then a downgrade.I truly hope im wrong but wow am I completely underwhelmed with this hire. How can we go from stoops, partridge, walters etc to a guy that has no DC experience i really dont get this.I truly hope im wrong and if I am I promise I'll be the first to eat crow just cant believe this the best we could do.I never thought id say this but this hire is giving me I miss Ahen vibes all the way around
What and I can’t stress this enough in the hell are you reading? He’s been a defensive guy his whole career.

I just wonder how the kids are going to feel being coached by a 60+ y.o. white guy from Montana. I really hope this works out, but this is the first cultural reference that comes to mind. I hope someone comes and shows me how wrong I was in the fall.

As others have pointed out, this is no longer valid in the Cignetti era.
