Everybody wants the sexy hire - young, smart, wins immediately. AKA Sean McVay or Mike McDonald.

However everybody forgets the Sean McVay coaching tree of young assistants getting NFL HC jobs has hits and misses

Zac Taylor Bengals, 6-11
Matt LaFleur Packers 9-7
Brandon Staley Chargers - fired 2 years prior
Kevin OConnell Vikings, - 9-8
Liam Cohen Jaguars 13-4
Mike LaFleur Cardinals - just hired

Bret said that Hauck is the only guy with who he discussed the position, and the only one he offered. Do we believe that? Was everyone making up the Partridge stuff? FWIW, Hauck looks to me do be a solid hire. Let's get him a few more dudes up front.
I believe him when he says Hauck was the only one he offered it too.
But I believe he conceptually talked about the position to many guys, trying to feel them out .
I dont think Partridge was ever as serious an option as we all thought.
Im betting BB and BH talked about it well before BH officially "retired".
Im thinking BH's enthusiam and knowledge of the 3-3-5 outweighed any possible offers to Stoops or Wilcox
jmo

has Oklahoma hired a DC yet ?

You might not like what I say. But I refuse to go along with a group. Appreciate your views as well and could not agree more.

I think Bret has some dirt on his hands with the whole Henry thing. He was simply looking out for the betterment of his friend/mentee and not the program. I doubt Bret will allow that to happen again. But he definitely allowed his feelings to get in the way of the program for the past year.

We were told we were getting upgrades in the portal. It’s almost March and we’re not getting visitors that Werner or anyone else is reporting. I’m sure these magical waiver guys are out there. But if this is it… man. Hauck has got some serious issues.
Have you looked at this from a longer term angle, and how Bret treats his staff and the corresponding impact of getting people to join him in the future? Another way to look at it is that he gave his staff member all the chances to succeed, and then helped him on the way out when it wasn’t working. Seems like having a boss like that would be attractive and help him attract talent the rest of his career, no? I’d say he’s playing the long game.

I was clearly talking about transfer portal rankings, not high school commits. Especially now that many of the coaches those players committed to have left, it’s naive to think they’ll just wait around when a new staff comes in and brings its own guys. I don’t see how high school rankings contradict my argument at all. The reality is this offseason has been handled poorly.

Well, considering we currently have like 6 coaches, GA's and other assistant coaches are definitely out there recruiting for us right now. And have we? We are ranked like 59th in the transfer portal rankings. We landed a good QB and a decent WR. Didn't land a stud on the OL or TE.

We did not land a single 4-star transfer on either side of the ball. I think not having coaches on the trail and being late to make a move on the DC hurt us. Not sure how you could argue otherwise. The offense also had a better sell going into the offseason, so of course they would do better. We have had a bunch of players commit to coaches who are no longer here. To a former DC who's not even here anymore. It was just not a clean offseason. Idk what went on with partridge, but putting all your eggs in one basket and basically punting on the portal and coaching staff hiring till after the super bowl did not really pay any dividends.

EDIT: and before people tell me i don't know the recruiting rules. I am well aware of the way it works. I also can see the results and they did not match the success we have had on the field. Simply put. So, the players aren't buying it either.
What's a 4 star? 😅

The returning core seniors should feast in this new scheme. Concerned about Dline, well because its still the Big10. Giving up 200 yards on 20 carries equals losses. CoachB has earned a right to make huge changes and time.
I'll say it....

I hate that we play Iowa again in the first year of our 3-3-5....

This defense is not meant for WIVC-style running attacks.

I do think it can give you an edge or at least a puncher's chance when facing the pass heavy schemes that much of the P4 run. I don't think we have the personnel up front, especially at nose tackle to run this scheme effectively in year 1. Indy has hinted towards something happening in the spring time at DL...Short of OL switching over...I don't know that I see it.

I'm ready for our Defense to be FUN again. Might not be perfect this year but I trust they can get this train rolling.

I’m just ready for them to make clean wrap up tackles for once. It seems like we have whiffed on way too many tackles over the past two years.

Like any other Illini fan I had moments where I wanted Henry to be shot out of a cannon last year, and no doubt the third down approach was regularly unsuccessful, but I do feel like the conversation about this defense belies the fact that it was 49th of 136 in FBS in yardage and 62nd in points against. It wasn't THAT bad, and could definitely get worse.
Maybe it could have been worse but it was no where near the level of consistency we need in every game to think about making the playoffs. We just wasted 2 years of a great quarterback that held up his side of things only to be let down by an inconsistent sometimes terrible defense. Getting rid of Henry was a must no matter how things play out.

You ain't lying.

I'm excited for a blitz heavy (from different spots) look and a focus on aggression. You can't sit back in coverage nowadays unless you are Miami or OSU and expect these offenses to make mistakes. QB plays is soo freaking good in the league now.

I always felt like Henry's defense was PERFECT for B1G football in 2010. Back when the QBs were more like Taylor Martinez at Nebraska...

Now it's Heisman candidates, 4 stars, and whoever Iowa and Northwestern can find to put back there.

I don’t care where a guy was drafted. I’m not hiring rashard mendenhall to come and coach RBs.
He probably wouldnt let laughery get any carries because he doesnt think white people are athletic.

Will be interesting to see how to staff fills out. Shaun Nua, Zarnell Fitch and Walter Stewart could make sense.

Rb - Julian Griffin, Deland McCullough are two I like
Griffin seems like the obvious fit and makes too much sense...

Where is the Deland McCullough rumblings coming from? Thought he was interviewing for NFL jobs still? Don't get me wrong, he'd be a home run hire...but I can't see him being interested.
