Coaching Carousel

Georgia would be a good situation for Tom Crean. Sat out a year, waited for better offers etc. Idk how good it will be for Georgia, but if I were Tom Crean I'd take that job. Unless he really likes broadcasting now.

I thought he was a good broadcaster.

Georgia would be a good situation for Thad Matta. Thad's older brother Greg has been in the Georgia area coaching his entire career. Could this be the coming together of the Matta brothers at Georgia?

Seems like Matta recovered from his "health problems" pretty quickly.

I would think taking an extended break from the seemingly non-stop world of coaching would help with that.

Tubby might not have been "fired" by UK, but he was run out of town.

But not the year they went to the Final Four. I think that's what SkyIDub was getting at.

I mean, Bruce Weber, Mike Davis, Paul Hewitt, Tom Crean.......lots of coaches who went to Final Fours eventually got canned. I can't think of any getting canned right after taking their team to a FF, though.

Bill Hodges of Indiana State resigned in 1982. That was three years after his 1979 FF with Larry Bird. Just a historical note.

Crean went to a Final 4 with Marquette, but got canned by IU, so he's a different case from the others who got canned by the school that the coach took to the Final 4.

True.

Though we can also add Kevin Ollie, Nolan Richardson, Rick Barnes, Ben Howland, JTIII, and John Brady to the list.

Steve Fisher was fired from Michigan, and Jim Harrick was fired from UCLA. Clem Haskins was fired from Minnesota. Jim O'Brien fired from Ohio State. Pitino fired from Louisville. All for off-court issues.

Seems like you would be an insider.

Fired after 11 years coaching the Purple Aces.

They were so good and so entertaining back when Arad McCutchan was their coach.

During the 1960's many of their away games were televised live locally. Home games were tape delayed on local television at 10:30 pm. This was during a time when there was a Saturday Big10 game televised, and an SEC game televised with Joe Deane on the broadcast.

Not that I have heard. Channel 14 in Evansville was reporting at 6:00 pm the Calbert Cheney information. My understanding is that the University will have a news conference tomorrow morning.

Both channel 14 and 44 in Evansville are reporting at 10:00 pm that the UE has reached out to Calbert Cheney. Channel 14 added that Chris Lowery and Boston Celtics assistant coach Walter McCartney have expressed interest. I believe all 3 are graduates of Evansville Harrison High School.

He might want to stay on the path to NBA coaching, but I'd at least gauge the interest of Ronald Nored.
Matthew Graves was recently let go by South Alabama. He was a rising coaching star at Butler and made a very suspect career move going to South Alabama. I suspect he'd have more success coming back to Indiana.
