Not sure if it has been mentioned on here or not but it looks like Tony Barbee might be joining Penny at Memphis, leaving the door open for a possible Orlando Antigua return to UK.

And a Nick Irvin to Illinois domino? I know it is hinted he wants to go straight to head coaching, but with the other rumors out there, just thought I'd speculate.

For some reason, this makes me nervous. Would he respect Underwood’s system if he were an assistant? I don’t know much about his personality in this sort of context. I would be worried that there might be mixed messages being taught to our guys.

Totally agree. Not sure if the pros outweigh the cons should this happen.

Strange considering Xavier is Chris Mack's alma mater.

Louisville definitely has a higher ceiling than Xavier, and basketball is life in the state of Kentucky. But ever since Xavier joined the new Big East, they've been a legit national power.

I would argue that Xavier in the past say 5-8 years is just as good if not a better overall program than L-Ville. They get recruits, have a national program now, continue to be ranked and go to tournaments and with no bad press usually. Plus they have Mack, so they will continue to climb, I believe they will win a C-Ship under Mack actually.:chief:

I think anyone of his ilk would have to think long and hard about Louisville not knowing exactly where that program ends up when all the FBI stuff is over. I wouldn't touch it unless I was a lower tier guy and the $$$ said go.

I can not imagine why Mack would take that job. I guess his wife is from Louisville but it isn't like Cincy is a huge distance away. And UL is just walking into a mess. High, unreasonable expectations from their fans, a lot of moving parts to try to get under control (boosters, etc.) and messes to clean up before building the program. Why leave a stable job where you compete at a high level at your alma mater?

the MIF tweet about Nick Irvin being a great possible head coach

DePaul was the first school that came to mind. Big East, Chicago, 11 straight losing seasons, and they haven't had much relevance since Joey Meyer was successful.

So to me that tweet was a subtle hint to make that change at DePaul. Not sure if that would be something DePaul was interested in, but a nightmare scenario for us.

Greg Marshall releases four-star recruit Alex Lomax from his letter of intent so he could play for conference rival Memphis (Penny Hardaway) next year without using his power to penalize him.

“I have a lot of respect for Alex Lomax and his family. When they chose Wichita State in the fall, over several other very nice offers, my staff and I were honored. Obviously, we take commitments to the Shocker program very seriously, but this is a very unique situation where a young man’s mentor and coach since the fifth grade has become a Division I head coach. Allowing him out of his NLOI without any kind of penalty is the right thing to do at this time.”

The coaching carousel no one is talking about: Missouri State is closing in on hiring Tennessee State coach, Dana Ford. That was according to ESPN's Jeff Goodman yesterday.

Dana Ford has Illinois roots as he was a standout basketball player at Egyptian in deep southern Illinois.

Yes, not only is he a really good coach but seems like a really good person as well.

That's a good move by Marshall, but classy and a really good person aren't words I've heard describe him in the past.

Maybe he's turned over a new leaf.

So no Roger Powell? Bummer.

It will be interesting to see who's willing to take that job on.

The article is favoring Chris Mack. But cannot imagine giving up what he has built at Xavier.

What if it is Kevin Keatts??

After only a year with NC State?

Would they look at someone like Tubby Smith who just parted ways with Memphis? Or is he more so ready to retire from full time coaching?

Is Tubby known as an honest, trustworthy guy? I honestly don't know, am truly asking.

If yes, perhaps he, or a guy like him, should be brought in to "right the ship," play by the rules, clean things up and THEN him retire and bring in a bigger name coach after the smoke has cleared.

That would be a tough sell to the Louisville fanbase as Tubby was fired at Memphis and underwhelming at both Texas Tech and Minnesota.

I can't think of any reason why Tubby Smith would want to wade into the cesspool that is Louisville.

I can't think of any reason why Louisville would want to hire someone who failed miserably at Memphis. I think Mack ends up there for some insane contract like 7 years $35mm, but if he stays at Xavier they'll get a highly regarded, successful coach.

On the opposite side of that coin, I can't think of any reason Mack would want to leave his cherry situation for a post apocalyptic hoops nightmare (hyperbole, but it was fun to write). Louisville fell down a lot of rungs in the pecking order with all of this crap, and I would be surprised if they got a hire half as good as Mack.
