Coaching Carousel

Just in case anyone had any interest in what the title of the thread says it is supposed to be about,

Loyola hired Tavaras Hardy (Assistant Coach at Georgia Tech) as Head Coach.

That is Loyola of Maryland.

Tavaras apparently played basketball for Northwestern before becoming a coach.

:clappy: I've heard this discussion ad nauseam since I joined this board 12 years ago. It would be great to have a separate thread for ex coaches and ex AD's.

They should make Matta tell them no before heading anywhere else. Steele isn't their guy.

I know it was awhile ago, but many people at Xavier were unhappy with how he handled leaving for Ohio St. I think enough people with say (boosters) would be against him that it'd be unlikely. I think it'd be more interesting if they made a run at Sean Miller, but I doubt their AD / president would do it considering the FBI cloud.

I think they stay in the family though with either Steele or Pat Kelsey (Winthrop HC, former Xavier assistant)

Kelsey is the obvious choice and probably a good one to carry on the run they have had.

Pearl is a hypocrite and a rat so he deserves no sympathy, but respect to Auburn for their unwavering and open commitment to cheating.

Totally agree. However, an athletic director's vote of confidence in major college sports is much like marriage being the leading cause of divorce. Both end prematurely about 50% of the time. I don't see how Bruce Pearl is ultimately surviving this scandal, but if anyone can, it's him.

On my phone so can’t link it but Xavier hired Travis Steele as it’s next head coach filling the last power conference opening.

Really? What did he do?

Prior to Xavier, Steele worked on the staff at Indiana. He joined the Hoosiers in August of 2006, taking on the duties of the video coordinator. After serving as the video coordinator for a season and a half while at IU, he was promoted to the position of assistant coach in February, 2008.

From 2001-06, Steele was a coach for the Spiece/Indiana Adidas Elite AAU Basketball program.

He was one of several people hired by Sampson right after he took over at Indiana who had a close relationship with the Gordon family. It is speculated that this was done to persuade Gordon to de-commit from Illinois, and it worked.

Gordon and his dad publicly stated numerous times that they were still committed to Illinois after the Sampson hiring, but their tone completely changed once Sampson hired the people who were close to the family, with Steele being the last, iirc.

This is about the calmest carousel I can remember.

Yes, and it's too bad too, because this is the one thing I look forward to every year. I don't know why, but I get a kick out of seeing where everyone ends up at.

Probably sounds sick, but I really don't revel in anyone losing their job. Just like to see where the dominoes fall. Especially in a year that we didn't have to speculate on if we should fire or who we could have gotten.

Kinda hoping Musselman from Nevada ends up leaving for a bigger school. Could help us with certain players if they choose to transfer

As of now there are no openings of interest. Plus, if the Martin twins don't go pro (they're 2nd round/undrafted on most mocks IIRC), he's projected to have a top ten team at Nevada next year. A year from now he's most likely the hottest candidate on the market.

The only real possibility, IMO, is if the FBI thing materializes and results in Sean Miller getting fired.

Otherwise, I agree.

I'll preface this by saying I don't know much about Musselman in general, nor do I have any clue what he's looking for in his next job. But generalizing based on coaches of a similar caliber and profile, there are maybe 15-20 programs that would probably entice somebody like him to leave Nevada. And none of those programs are open at the moment.

We'll see. He's making $1m/year, so he isn't terribly underpaid, but most major conference programs could double that. I wouldn't be shocked if he jumped to a mid-tier major conference job if it were to come open. I'm thinking about a job like USC, which could come open thanks to the Feds.

That's a good point.

He's from Ohio originally, but played college ball in San Diego and has spent most of the past 15 years out West. Thus, I would expect a school like USC to appeal to him.

Musselman is a good coach, and more importantly he has talent, he wont go anywhere while that proven talent is there... agree with another poster. He will be more of a draw next season even.:chief:

That's assuming the Martin twins stay. NBADRAFT.net (not my favorite source, but draft express is now"insider" at ESPN) has Caleb late first, Cody early second. The mocks that have them undrafted, do so because they are assuming they will not be in the draft. They are also 23 plus years old already.

Why would they come back, assuming they graduate on time? They are past normal grad age already. Does anyone think their draft stock will improve with another year? Do they want to start their pro career at age 24? This decision is similar to Blacks. He did the smart thing, I expect the Martin twins ultimately do as well.

Without the Martin twins, Nevada's roster is garbage. Remember they only played 6-7 guys all year.
