Is their a previous failed head coach that holds a higher standing than Groce for us? Weber's schtick got old, Self/Kruger left, and I feel no love lost for any of our football coaches. He genuinely seemed like a great guy, decent recruiter, but someone who didn't have the coaching chops to cut it in the majors quite yet. Not to mention a clear string of bad luck.

Great to see him get a team on track and be rewarded for it.
Easily Kruger for me. Always thought very highly of him, couldn't fault him for taking the NBA money/opportunity, and have enjoyed watching his success (somewhat modest) with UNLV and Oklahoma. I think way more of him than Groce, who never should have been coaching at a Big Ten level.

Edit: I'm realizing that you were likely excluding Self/Kruger as they left, not failed. If so......nevermind.

You'd probably have to go back to Gene Bartow. We thankfully have not had many "failed" coaches in the last 45 years.

I think Gene Bartow was the first Illini coach to leave for another college program. Bartow went to UCLA in 1975 after just one year at Illinois.

IMO, Groce's big achilles was he swung for "fence" on PG too much (Snider's, Brunson, simpson..etc). If he had recruited a "TJL like" PG sooner, he would have been more successful. I think he was a "players coach" too...which doesn't always work.

Can't wait to see the dominoes fall. This should be interesting!

You’d have to love where you are not to jump when UNC calls.

Wonder if Pitino’s name pops up?

This could make things very interesting. Maybe not particularly for us, but just in general. Big jobs like that opening usually lead to some interesting dominos.

Carolina will look for someone in the Carolina Family so we should be safe this time.
My guess is Wes Miller, former gaurd who has done well at UNC Greensboro

Groce seems like he would been an absolute star in so many professsions, I’m just not sure basketball coach at a power conference school is one of them.

I hate April 1.

If UNC is joking, this is one of the best ones ever, even ESPN picked it up on their homepage.

There's been a couple of junior people on my team over the years that I've felt that way about. Good people, intelligent, and hard working. will have a place somewhere, just not here. Was difficult to let them go, but it was the right decision. I agree, JFG definitely fit that mold. Makes you happy for them when they do find the right place for them.

If not a joke announcement, you gotta call Mark Few.
Especially if he wins the title this year...it would be a nice coda on his Gonzaga career...and about the only move he could make that would seem like moving up.

Mark Few is not leaving Gonzaga for anything! He grew up in the Northwest and has spoken many times about how much he enjoys the wildlife and style there. He has a machine right now and has a tremendous class coming in next year, and I'm sure every year thereafter as long as he wishes.

I would think his salary will be substantially raised after this year.
