I imagine two reasons. One is comfort level, two is that the feeling of being burned is never fun so fans think alumni are less likely to leave them with said feeling.

Its the same with recruiting...and really just life in general...getting rejected or spurned sucks, so some people latch onto what they know because the risk needed for greatness isn’t worth the pain of the miss.

...boy this mighta got too deep for an Illini fanboard.

Um Kentucky can pay a number we couldn’t reach and the compliance office down there is a little easier to navigate.

I also don’t think many of us have extensive lists of assistant coaches in memory so our default proposal tends to be who we know....our guys. I’m sure it’s common.
