I understand this take in most industries. But I think an alternative analogy would be equating coaches and assistant coaches to either endorsement deals or sales jobs.
The value produced is greater than what their individual value is. These are very public figures so you might be able to find someone for $800k that has the same value to the program or the operation, but do they have the same value to the public, and then the financial benefit that comes from having a higher public image in merch sales, tickets, etc?
I see that on head coaches, but I would bet that less than half of the people in SFC on game night know the assistant coaches’ names. We on this board are a strange, beautiful brand of crazy.
JMO...I believe asst pay pool for awesome group (few would argue ours is "awesome") should be at least 50% of HC pay....I dont believe ours is. Dont have exact, but believe these are rough.
BU =3.4M/yr...asst pool roughly 1.1-1.4.
I also noted the recent extension for BU was to 26 and assistants to 22 or 23....so it doesn't seem assistants are incentivized with long term contracts...which seems to point to us expecting a bit of a revolving door.
I expected to lose OA sooner rather than later, but was expecting Chin to stay home. If we lose both...I will be most disappointed at losing Chin.

I’m all for making moves but at that amount of money we would surely be able to pick up plenty of talent elsewhere. What is the ROI on that money? $3m is almost top 10 of head coaches!

That would be 200k more than the HC at North Carolina. $700k more than the highest paid coach in the Mountain West. Leonard Hamilton has been at FSU for 19 yrs. and his base is $2.25M. If that absurd salary number is correct, when Orlando Antigua packs his things and moves back to Kentucky his bags must be heavy.

I'll give you the quick answer: we're better off paying our best recruiter, high level big man coach, who also is one of the top assistants in the country.
Pretty sure “loaded teams” are still eligible to get their degrees.
Assistant coaches who can recruit are out. Assistant coaches who can guarantee 30 point tournament wins are in.
I'm pretty sure Chin can't leave until he's suplexed Fran at mid-court of SFC.
I’m confident that BU will find a qualified replacement for Antigua. He’s got an eye for hiring assistants and knows what he is doing.
Ref the apparent OA angry wife....if that was my wife I would relish staying on the road recruiting.

The $3 million is a bit of hyperbole to illustrate that the value of keeping this coaching staff together is greater than their potential salary demands, and that if OA is worth $2mil to UK the he’s worth more to the Illini for building the brand to UKs level.
