OK "dad"Let it all play out. Could be many waves ahead, who really knows. I don't like the direction the college game is going at this exact moment but my opinion doesn't matter and I sure as heck can't fault anyone for taking a raise or using leverage etc
Eventually these recruiting specialists all pack their bags and move on.I remember when Tony Yates left for Cincinnati, IIRC? I thought that was a big deal. Jimmy Collins filled that hole nicely.
Nothing confirmed 100% but that’s the smoke from the coaching carousel thread and Twitter.Huge relief if true.
We'd never lose a game to Loyola ever again. So we hire that Nick Irvin?
get all the guys from MaC Irvin fire
I understand this take in most industries. But I think an alternative analogy would be equating coaches and assistant coaches to either endorsement deals or sales jobs.Well, the rumor is $2M to OA, so they are saving $1.2M.
So the question is, are we better off paying the next best guy $800K per year for the next three years - with $3.6M sitting there to pay to other coaches, facilities, etc... or putting $6M into OA for those three years?
I don’t claim to know the answer, but if you think you can get someone close to OA value for $800K, you don’t pay OA $2M. You spend that $1.2M somewhere else.
A lot of smoke right now...
I see that on head coaches, but I would bet that less than half of the people in SFC on game night know the assistant coaches’ names. We on this board are a strange, beautiful brand of crazy.I understand this take in a most industries. But I think an alternative analogy would be equating coaches and assistant coaches to either endorsement deals or sales jobs.
The value produced is greater than what their individual value is. These are very public figures so you might be able to find someone for $800k that has the same value to the program or the operation, but do they have the same value to the public, and then the financial benefit that comes from having a higher public image in merch sales, tickets, etc?
JMO...I believe asst pay pool for awesome group (few would argue ours is "awesome") should be at least 50% of HC pay....I dont believe ours is. Dont have exact, but believe these are rough. It’s not about whether or not you could pay him $2M. And it’s not about whether or not he adds $2M in value.
The question is, can you go find a guy for $800K who can deliver value that is within $1.2M of what OA delivers. If you can, then that’s a better value.
People often think their employer should pay them based on the value they create, but it’s not the case. You only pay them up to the amount that you think you could hire someone else of equal talent.
If we’re paying $800K for this role, we will get a solid replacement.
I’m all for making moves but at that amount of money we would surely be able to pick up plenty of talent elsewhere. What is the ROI on that money? $3m is almost top 10 of head coaches! Why not? Let’s say Illini are comfortable paying $800k hypothetically. What’s $2 million? As a vested interest in the success of the program and brand would you pay $1.2 million to for the benefits of keeping him?
Players staying vs leaving
Fan excitement
Marketing
Etc
OA leaving isn’t a cost free action. The team will now need to recruit a replacement. Rerecruit the players. There is an opportunity loss in the marketing that implicitly comes from the Illlini outbidding UK.
Pay him $3 million and flex.
This isn’t a hostage situation; it’s the free market and the market sets the rate.
Not everyone is in a position to pay the market rate like this, but the Illini certainly are.
LOL. Can I just say, yeah, this looks like a husband being dragged out by his angry wife to talk to a neighbor about a problem. And it's typically not trespassing to knock on someone's front door.Man OA does not look like he wants to be there
That would be 200k more than the HC at North Carolina. $700k more than the highest paid coach in the Mountain West. Leonard Hamilton has been at FSU for 19 yrs. and his base is $2.25M. If that absurd salary number is correct, when Orlando Antigua packs his things and moves back to Kentucky his bags must be heavy.I’d be disappointed if we offered an assistant 2 million!
Do you have to pay extra to get the cool theme music on your Ring videos? I was pumped!Don't know WHAT to think of this!?
You can buy everything in the state except the race horses with $2mThat would be 200k more than the HC at North Carolina. $700k more than the highest paid coach in the Mountain West. I'll give you the quick answer: we're better off paying our best recruiter, high level big man coach, who also is one of the top assistants in the country.Well, the rumor is $2M to OA, so they are saving $1.2M.
So the question is, are we better off paying the next best guy $800K per year for the next three years - with $3.6M sitting there to pay to other coaches, facilities, etc... or putting $6M into OA for those three years?

Pretty sure “loaded teams” are still eligible to get their degrees. Also, I don’t want to cheer for or support a team that sacrifices their standards and morals for the sake of a “loaded team”. 98% of these men will need their degree and life is slightly larger than college basketball.
We'd never lose a game to Loyola ever again.
Ref the apparent OA angry wife....if that was my wife I would relish staying on the road recruiting.LOL. Can I just say, yeah, this looks like a husband being dragged out by his angry wife to talk to a neighbor about a problem. And it's typically not trespassing to knock on someone's front door.
The $3 million is a bit of hyperbole to illustrate that the value of keeping this coaching staff together is greater than their potential salary demands, and that if OA is worth $2mil to UK the he’s worth more to the Illini for building the brand to UKs level.I’m all for making moves but at that amount of money we would surely be able to pick up plenty of talent elsewhere. What is the ROI on that money? $3m is almost top 10 of head coaches!
