I read several of Howard's poorly received statements this year as him thinking he didn't have to play nice because he was going to be off to something better soon. There's no reason to piss off other fan bases with little slights, and really i'm thinking more about the "We’re a lot different from Nebraska and Maryland. I’ll just leave it like that.” comment thank any of the Illinois-specific championship stuff. Maryland is going to be hyped every time they play Michigan for years after his shouting match with Turgeon. Howard doesn't seem to care, and having one foot out the door with a successful season seemed a good bet as to why.

But as the season progressed, it seemed more and more likely that he just didn't know what he was doing, or that claiming superiority and then offering nothing to back it up is how you appeal to a good part of Michigan's fanbase.

IU would have to PAY, but it could happen.

This will be a big splash hire.

Know quite a few big-time IU boosters and I got the same 4 from all of them. Stevens, Drew, Beard, Oats.

Someone needs to explain this to me. The Bob Knight connection seems to be what everyone is pointing at but Knight and Indiana are still not on good terms. Plus Beard coached under Bob Knight at TTU. He's a grad of TTU and UT. He's coached at TTU for 10 years before bouncing around the South as a head coach. The furthest north he's coached in college is.....University of North Texas?

The only angle I can see is him leveraging for a bigger contract at TTU. He's a demi-god in Lubbock and well liked by those in TTU athletics. I cannot see them letting him leave for financial reasons.

Howard seems cut from a different cloth. He has a heck of a backstory with humble roots, rising up to unimaginable heights. He has plenty of money, and the attitude to play life on his own terms now. Maybe it gets him in trouble and he's not media polished, but so what?

This was linked to the story above, but it has some nice tidbits about how he how he works as a coach. Doesn't seem like an opportunist that's thinking about leaving. JMO

i didn't like him when he , as a instate recruit , went to scUM....I didn't like him when it was exposed about the FAB 5 and $$$$$$$.....I didn't like him when he quit playing the schedule he was supposed to play.......I didn't like him when he proclaimed himself and team B1G champs, playing 3 less games than us...
I didn't like him wandering out of the coaches box and threatening to kill another B1G coach.....

GUESS WHAT ??????/

I DON'T LIKE MR. COWARD OR ANYTHING scUM RELATED , AT ALL........

JM.... very very HUMBLE OPINION

I ready for the Illini to start playing a game or 6.............................................

someone explain isu hiring otzelberger. i know he coached there as an assistant, but he inherited a very good program from scott nagy and maintained it (barely so, in his first season), and then was nothing spectacular at unlv. i mean not even mediocre this past year-- 12-15 (8-10).

this seems akin to, oh i don't know, hiring a former player at assistant who really isn't qualified for the position. . .

Yeah, who really knows. Perhaps he has a great relationship with the AD? I assume he must have developed some relationships with HS/AAU coaches in the region that might pay more dividends in the midwest than it did out in the desert.

"There’s no athletic director in the country that can hire a coach and guarantee that coach is going to win," Iowa State athletics director Jamie Pollard said in a video statement produced and released by the school. "You can guarantee integrity. You can guarantee character. You can guarantee fit by doing due diligence. And in this particular case, TJ worked here for eight years. "We know about his integrity. We know how he fits our culture. That really gave him a leg up."

As much as anything it seems like the AD thinks he made a mistake giving the job to Prohm over Otzelberger 5 years ago.

They are also apparently on a tight budget. When you factor in buyouts and expected salaries, sometimes that limits your options.

Based on the article and buyouts and salaries being discussed, he probably comes back on the below side of what prohm was making...Also, that stuff about the Mrs. being an alum....

BTW, who DOESN"T wanting to live in Idiots Out Walking Around land ?????

Just curious. How long do you all think it will take for the stink to fade from Gregg Marshall? Do you think he will ever coach college ball again? Seems IU has been more willing to keep volatile coaches than most, if they are winning...

not sure how much time is necessary, but its not nearly enough time yet to give him the keys to a B1G program. Pretty sure hes going to need to work his way back into coaching either with a small program or as an asst. What he allegedly did is pretty tough to overcome these days

Btownbanners is going crazy with Stevens to IU rumors. They’re flight tracking and everything. Can’t remember where I’ve seen that behavior before haha.

The entire site has rallied around a couple “insiders” and are just eating it all up. The prevailing idea is that something will be announced tomorrow.

I suggest heading over there if you’re bored.

i don't follow the NBA nearly as closely as i used to, but a lot of the discussion on Btownbanners saying that he's on the outs at Boston anyway, and that's a big reason why he's consdering taking the IU job (actually, they're now saying it's close to a done deal and should be announced soon). Anyway, i'm looking at his record at boston, and, honestly, doesn't look that bad. winning seasons/playoffs almost every year he's been there. conference finals appearances 3 of last 4 years. yea this season has been mediocre, but this is enough to run a guy out of town? I'm guessing the assumption is one of those "roster is better than our record so it must be the coach" situations. But you could do a lot worse with a good roster, and they seem like they're 1/2 pieces of the puzzle away from being a champioship contender.

College Basketball World Reacts To Juwan Howard Job Speculation

-------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't read previous pages of this thread, so please delete if redundant.......I found this odd given the short time Mr. Coward has been a head coach....jmho
"Howard has turned the Wolverines into a dominant power in just two seasons."

Huh? Some previous coach may say he placed you on third base.
