I hope OA and Chin realize this is a short term experiment for KY. If something doesn't happen like a final 4 appearance in the next 2 years they will find themselves in the game shoots and ladders sliding lower than from where they started from. Neither one would be handed the head coaching job if there would be a change at the top. This is high risk poker especially for Chin in my estimation.
Short term but also 4x the salary. Can't blame OA at all.

Does anybody know of another example of a school poaching two assistants from the same school? (that doesn't involve assistants heading with a HC that got hired elsewhere). This seems unheard of but maybe it's just something I've never had to pay attention to.

I think we see where all this is headed.

Players now firmly have their Portal in place. Next in line? Assistant coaches. All of them revert to one-year contracts with an option to walk at the end of the term. Head coaches? We want stability! Head coaches have to stay at least TWO years before entering the Head Coach Portal.

Finally, we get the Fan Portal. All ball fans get to change their loyalty after each year. The one rule is that you cannot return to the same team until you’ve switched to somebody else for at least a year.

Broadcasters? Sorry. We like the guys The Beloved have. They gotta stay where they are until We say so.

Basketball returning to its true roots. Head out to the court or blacktop. Just choose up sides and have at it. You stay out there until somebody beats you. Next rule change: You Make It You Take It.

Really, what’s going on the Big Ball World right now is a whole lot of fun...
I plan to enter the NBA fan portal to whatever team drafts Ayo.

1. Most are really underrating Underwood as far as a recruiter. The players love him.
2. As far as transfers.. leaving your brothers that you built lifetime bonds with this last year for one coach seems crazy.
3. We will be fine regardless
Thank you. I've read the last 10 pages of this thread and have come to a conclusion. Gasp!
When BU was hired, most of us were ecstatic that we brought in a proven coach that was better than Groce. He then proved his worth by hiring OA and Chin, kept Jamall Walker. We got Chin to recruit Chicago and OA for his phenomenal track record. Who is to stay top assistants won't come interviewing with JW in the next 72 hours for these newly prestigious openings. If OA came when we are a dumpster fire, who is to say there aren't coaches out there who want to be part of a proven team coming off of a #1 seed. Doomsday has not come, in fact, this might grow the program more. Show some optimism and hope for our 🟦and🟧

How about 2 SEC titles, 1 elite eight and 1 second round loss? I think you are over doing the Cal and his staff on the hot seat thing...

As much as we might think we know the inner workings of the university's finances, there's a ton we don't know.
I totally get that and $2M for an assistant is absurd. However, I learned long ago from a boss that if a place really wants you, they'll find the money. I mean, Indiana found someone with $10M to give Archie to get the hell out. You can only go to that well so many times, so I'm not specifically advocating for it. I'm just saying something could be accomplished.

If there's nothing we can do to retain OA and/or Chin, then we need to damage control ASAP by poaching a top assistant from another program. Don't give anyone any time to feel bad for us or to start whispering that the program has been gutted. Need to inspire confidence in the current roster and incoming recruits. This is also the moment where Josh communicates loud and clear to BU whether he truly has his back and will do everything to ensure BU can be successful here for years to come.

Who do we steal from? If we can’t pay our coaches enough to stay away from the big boys, how can we pay enough to steal assistants from the big boys? Are we going to hire up and comers and prove to be a steppingstone to the big boys or are we going to be big boys?

One question I haven’t seen asked, is this all about money or was there also issues amongst BU and the staff?

We all knew that we would lose OA and Chin one day, was just hoping it was for a nice head coaching job. I'd be surprised if Kentucky was the only one's that were pursuing them. They've done an amazing job at Illinois.

Exactly. The chances of being successful at KU are still higher than at Illinois (as much as we hate to admit that). Better chances of success + greater latitude to shake and bake in the gray area + significant increase in pay... would be foolish to turn down, honestly.

You're really trying to rationalize your way into this being a bad move for these assistant coaches. (It's not.)

I think you are UNDERestimating the rabid dementia of the fans of UK.....

They are simply delusional and not at all happy with last years team and record....UK fans don't give out mulligans no matter the circumstances....

The history of UK BB isn't a fairy tale, unicorn type existence, no matter the number of titles.....

I didn't say hot seat. I said if they aren't successful in the near term things might change and they are expendable.
