the thread where OA and Chin spurn the blue bloods, signaling a true return to prominence for Illinois basketball

at a joint news conference, OA and Chin, flanked by JW, BU, AC, AM, and Kofi, read a prepared statement:
“Good morning illini Nation. We’re here to stay. No further questions.”

Still maintain if $$ is equal we are the more stable option. We will take a step back next year but our roster is in good shape and we should be in the tourney. Cal has one more down year and his seat starts to get very warm and I think he actually looks to leave before he gets fired. Doubt wherever he goes will have the kind of assistant pool we or UK are talking about.
Barring something crazy happening, it’s a virtual lock Coach O can stay here all 4 years.

I always felt (like him on not) Gunther let his pride get the better of him by not giving $ Bill keys to Busey bank. This is a bit harder because we are talking about an assistant, but at some point either had to define it self as either a destination for coaches or the MAC of coaches for the Blue Bloods.
I give Whitman huge props here, for the first time in my life we are swinging back. The cheating scum that is UK may very well win, but we used every method we could to keep our coaches. I, in particular, love the 4 years part. If UK out bids us they will have to make the same level of commitment and if that does not show OA how much WE want him here nothing will.
Until the NCAA stops coddling the blue bloods, we are nothing more than a feeder program - rinse and repeat.

Let’s not pretend it’s a more stable job here. Kentucky practically recruits itself, foul play or not. It’s not even close to the same at Illinois.

It’s a much more challenging job to sell Illinois to recruits relative to UK. We’re more likely to miss on top recruits and so we’re less likely to consistently floor a top team, so it’s inherently less stable.

Better recruiting does not mean more stable. UK also comes with insane expectations that haven’t been meet for 5 years or so now. In my mind stable = which regime is more likely to still be around in 4 years? And my money’s on Underwood right now.

By that definition, we ended up with 15 years of Weber and Groce and are perennial bottom feeders. Stability can't only be measured by who's coaching.

I agree 100%. Plus with the transfer portal, the Blue Bloods could be in big trouble. They have 13 players and play 8. The other 5 used to sit on the bench for a few years, now they say I am leaving. Look no further than the NCAA Tourney this year. The best player on UCLA was a transfer from Kentucky.

That's called recruiting, right?

Who would you rather have a chance to play for, the Yankees or the Mariners? Same salary and the Mariners have a better record right now... The answer is still the Yankees

I disagree... Cal had 1 really bad year, but in your scenario I bet the 8 man rotation he has are just as good as most or everyone in the country.

Not just arrogant, also incompetent. First he locked Self out of the building, then he hired Keady’s reject when Thad Motta would have walked over hot coals for the job. Gunther knew it, and refused to heed any counsel but his own.

I think the rumors of Calipari's imminent coaching death are being greatly exaggerated.

These guys are going to do what’s best for their livelihoods and careers options.
IMO Chin has a better chance of getting that HC gig if he stays and sees this through rather than moving to another assistant position.

IF OA wants another shot at being a HC, I don’t think it matters if he stays here or goes to UK. It’s probably about money, flexibility, autonomy etc with him.

"Keady's reject" had back to back at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament at an MVC school with a trip to the Sweet 16... Also played #2 in the country Illinois to a 3 point game in Vegas, with that same MVC team...

You need to look no further than Josh Whitman for the Illini success. We are in great hands with Josh Whitman. Mike Thomas set Illini Basketball and Football back decades. The last time we had a very good Football team was under Neal Stoner and Mike White. Now Whitman hires Bielema and Underwood. As long as Whitman is our AD we will prosper. Loren Tate said when Illinois hired Josh, when you enter any room with Josh Whitman, np matter who is in the room, he is the smartest man in the room. Go Illini !

Meh. Weber owes Roland Roberts big time.

I was all in supporting him. I was wrong he was a bad hire.

180* from player recruiting, it seems the longer this draws out, the more it favors the Illini, IMO.
