This friction story makes no sense. OA and CC are being offered 2-3x raises by frickin Kentucky, whom OA has a good history with. Why in the world would coming back to Illinois even be an option they'd consider if there actually is some sort of conflict? It makes zero sense. Kentucky will give you more money, easier recruiting, more talented roster, higher prestige, etc. If anything, this seems like a "let's see how much we could actually squeeze out of Illinois" situation. If I'm JW and BU, I call their bluff. They either want to return or want to leave. Changing the 3rd assistant isn't going be be the deciding factor.

Edit: This kinda seems like a narrative builder. "We offered to make this staff the highest paid staff in the country. Ultimately, they made personal decisions to leave..."

One of the funniest parts about this whole thing to me is people keep mentioning the coordinates on Orlando's Twitter page being to Lexington. He's always had that on there. It's meaningless.

I've said many times on here that we now have out best recruiting staff EVER! The talent they are bringing in plus the 2022 commits is unheard of to a fan from the late 50's. Do players pick a school for the head coach...or from the asst. thats been recruiting them for years?

Not sure I agree with this, but not going to debate it either. The fact is that we're seeing excellent players choose Illinois, guys developing under this staff, and willing to play as a team. You can always complain about the misses, point fingers if guys don't improve much or don't buy in. In the end, you need staff that can evaluate talent and character, project their development in your system, and take calculated risks on who and how to make offers. I think this staff has shown they are right up there with the best in college bball, and perhaps as importantly, weren't reliant on riding the coat tails of a single player.

Not my call, but I can see why the people who call the shots are fighting hard and willing to put $ behind this. It looks to me like this massive uptick is sustainable with the right people in place.

It looks like there’s a new insider. ☺️

I am really getting sick & tired of this. I stupidly thought kids came to play for the HEAD COACH. I dont remember having read any discussions about kids going to Duke for someone other than Coach K, same with Izzo, Self, Cal, etc etc etc. If they want to go to UK, frigging go. There are others that will replace them & do just fine. Hopefully the next ups are being recruited right now & are ready to go.

Just my sniff test. Obviously could be wrong. Just thinking if I found a better job for significantly more money, and I worked at a place I had conflict with, I sure would not return, even if they matched the offer. Common sense.

Edit: I'm not saying your information is wrong. I appreciate every nugget you give us lol.
Not saying you are wrong. No inside information. But I can certainly see if you love everything else about a job except for one aspect, might as well bring up the one concern you have while in negotiations. Doesn't mean that you hate your current position. Just means that if you are going to stay, might as well address whatever is on your mind.

But again, you could also be 100% correct.

No one comes to us FOR Underwood. Not saying he doesn't play a role in the process, but zero recruits are calling up U of I because they want to come play for Underwood.

OA & Chin develop and groom our guys for the next level. *OA for Bigs and Chin for Guards

Underwood does no outbound recruiting. He is there once there is interest to talk about where the kids fit in and how he plans to use them. Development plans are all from OA/Chin.

Gentry is considered a game time X's and O's guy and doesn't do much recruiting or developing.

High octane recruits 100% care if OA/Chin are here. They want to know their development and promises made during the process will be upheld.

This is just such a classic Loyalty storyline.

This (coach/recruit) is solid with us.
New offer from other school.
(Coach/recruit) is going to other school.
Loyalty meltdown.
Illinois counter and gains back momentum/advantage.
Loyalty rejoices.
Other school pushes harder.
(Coach/recruit) chooses other school.

Rinse and repeat.

Edit: And of course there's always some unsubstantiated weird reason for said decision.

So how soon do we hear about some players reopening their recruitment? It seems pretty clear Antigua and Chin are gone. I know others here have alluded to the idea that our '22 commits might get shaky if that happens. Same goes for Payne. And I'm guessing Kofi is as good as gone, too. Thoughts?

It’s simple, they would’ve accepted our counteroffers by now if they wanted to be here. That didn’t happen so let’s move on and find some better assistants.

Lol. How convenient the "conflict" issue leaks out right before...

It's how we landed Underwood. It could be something pretty subtle --very difficult to know people's emotions until they open up and feel safe discussing them. Underwood is obviously going to bat for his assistants, regardless.

UK insiders are usually pretty plugged in, so that tweet is pretty depressing.

That's not really how negotiations work. I don't see Kentucky saying "They would have accepted our first offer if they wanted to be here. That didn’t happen so let’s move on and find some better assistants."

Payne signed his LOI, so for him to go anywhere we would have to let him out.

No. That same guy said it was a done deal last week too. Do I still think they end up going? Yes(just my opinion). But they are both on vacation and don’t want any news breaking while they are on vacation.
thanks and fair enough.
