OK, so say you are BU, and you still have hope to keep OA and CC, but are not certain. When do you reach out to feel for interest from other candidates? Was is done a week or two ago, now or after it is settled and you lost an assistant or two? I personally hate interviewing someone for a position that may or may not be available. I have done it, but don't like to.

No one comes to us FOR Underwood. Not saying he doesn't play a role in the process, but zero recruits are calling up U of I because they want to come play for Underwood.

OA & Chin develop and groom our guys for the next level. *OA for Bigs and Chin for Guards

Underwood does no outbound recruiting. He is there once there is interest to talk about where the kids fit in and how he plans to use them. Development plans are all from OA/Chin.

Gentry is considered a game time X's and O's guy and doesn't do much recruiting or developing.

High octane recruits 100% care if OA/Chin are here. They want to know their development and promises made during the process will be upheld.
If this is the case then wouldn't it make more sense for Whitman to fire Underwood and make OA the head coach?

You guys are citing a fan's twitter account who has 300 followers, who is saying what she heard on the radio. Negotiations seem ongoing, but to have a freakout over some nobody's tweet seems a bit premature.
I wouldn't say freaking out, just thought the wording was a bit over the top.

This should always be the Illini way whether it comes to recruits or coaches or anything else.

Not gonna beg anybody to stay. That’s not the definition of an elite program or a program with pride. Offer them a fair (lucrative!) deal... give them a reasonable amount of time to respond... and if they haven’t gotten back aboard The Orange & Blue Ship... set sail for new Assistant Captains ASAP. This (Illini) ship IS going back to the high profile ports and desirable destinations we all covet. All aboard?!

Seems like a judgment call, but I would have started reaching out to others as soon as UK re-countered. If UK had made a play, but then went away after we countered, I would have been okay not preparing a back-up plan up to that point. But once UK re-countered, you have every reason to believe you're going to have a bidding war on your hands. At that point, you absolutely need to start preparing for the possibility you will lose. That way, if you lose OA and CC, you set yourself up to announce their replacements soon after. Languishing with only one assistant for any significant period of time will directly hurt the program and indirectly hurt program perception.

No, the necessary skills for head coaches and assistant coaches do not overlap 100%.

I am positive feelers were sent out the second the initial offers were made.

You are describing the formula for ending up with a staff full of coaches that no one else wants. College basketball is cutthroat. When you have something others want, you have to fight to keep it or others will take it from you. There's nothing elite about being a pushover.

Are counter offers considered begging?

This type of take-it-or-leave-it approach works as a negotiation tactic if you are still pushing for a deal but if you are suggesting pulling out of the running on one of the best recruiters in the game, who you already have, during a high stakes battle with an elite program - I would call that quitting. That’s not how you become an elite program.

After looking at it again, I don’t think it’s legit. Just some fan hoping it sticks.

You wanna date the hot, smart girl with an awesome personality? Or settle for the girl who no one wants but you know couldn't do better than you?

C'mon man.

> Would you take what he’s done or would you take the roster that OA and Chin assembled?

I would take Gentry without question. Then I would take the $1.5M/yr and go hire 2 recruiting assistants to compliment his skills.
OA and Chin without question. Talent on the roster is the biggest factor in being successful in college bball. An analytics/X/O's guy is easier to replace than someone that has grasped the fine art of recruiting.

This just has the feel of a recruiting Battle that I don’t expect us to win and then my fears are confirmed. I really hope I am wrong.
