I think we have a fair enough sample size indicating that to "go hire 2 recruiting assistants" isn't as trivial as you make it seem. Recruiting is the life blood of college programs.@illini0440

I would take Gentry without question. Then I would take the $1.5M/yr and go hire 2 recruiting assistants to compliment his skills.
Of course losing Antigua and Chin would set us back with the connections to the kids we are on currently. You guys make it seem as if Chin and Antigua are the only 2 recruiters in America. If I recall we haven't pulled the #1 recruiting class with those 2. Point is if they decide to go to Kentucky 1.5 mill will go a long way in replacing those 2 assistants. I want them back but it's not gonna send us to the cellar if we have to replace them. Here's hoping we send Kentucky packing with their tail between their legs.I think we have a fair enough sample size indicating that to "go hire 2 recruiting assistants" isn't as trivial as you make it seem. It is obvious to me that you have never been in the unenviable management position to hire someone. There are a lot of factors that go into a hire working out, either short term or long term. And it often ends up that you have to carry out one of the very least desiable management tasks....firing someone.Of course losing Antigua and Chin would set us back with the connections to the kids we are on currently. He wasn't a coach at Gonzaga. He was DOBO.Why did Gentry leave Gonzaga in the first place? Was it a promotion for him to come here?
thanksHe wasn't a coach at Gonzaga. He was DOBO.
Stephen Gentry - Assistant Coach - Men's Basketball Coaches - University of Illinois Athletics
Stephen Gentry is in his second season as an assistant coach after joining the Fighting Illini staff in August 2019. He was instrumental in schematic changesfightingillini.com
Correct. There is a reason we are offering to triple OAs salary and not GentrysI think we have a fair enough sample size indicating that to "go hire 2 recruiting assistants" isn't as trivial as you make it seem. Recruiting is the life blood of college programs.
Agree. For all the talk about how we can just take the $1.5 and find other "recruiters" (which isn't as easy as it sounds, and it discredits what else OA and Chin bring).... we can also find sharp Xs and Os minds to take that roleCorrect. There is a reason we are offering to triple OAs salary and not Gentrys
One would think that might take care of whatever issues there currently are. Getting paid 3x the other guy should establish a pretty clear pecking order. But I'm also flying blind here.Correct. There is a reason we are offering to triple OAs salary and not Gentrys
Ummm 50/50, 60/40, 80/20....just depends on who ya ask.
But, is this a package deal all or nothing situation? Are OA and Chin that tight that they're inseparable and will go where the other one goes, or will they make individual decisions that make sense for them?Ummm 50/50, 60/40, 80/20....just depends on who ya ask.
Did you sleep through the Self years? For the most part, most Illini basketball coaches have reeled in good talent. Based on recruiting rankings, Weber's back to back classes of Paul, Richardson, Griffey, Bertrand, and then Richmond, Leonard, and Head may have been the most impressive 2 year span in awhile. Obviously they didn't result in anything though.I've said many times on here that we now have out best recruiting staff EVER! The talent they are bringing in plus the 2022 commits is unheard of to a fan from the late 50's. Do players pick a school for the head coach...or from the asst. thats been recruiting them for years?
They work really well together. I think the only reason UK wants Chin is because OA wants him there. So it’s really up to OA. Still think Chin could stay if OA goes to UK but the odds aren’t great. But, is this a package deal all or nothing situation? Are OA and Chin that tight that they're inseparable and will go where the other one goes, or will they make individual decisions that make sense for them?
They are working on it.Without question, if the options are OA/Chin or Gentry, I go with OA/Chin 100 times out of 100.
Hopefully, there is a third option of keeping them all without ruining the locker room...
Gentry has been at every stop Underwood has correct? From SFA to OSU to Illinois. I've been in enough locker rooms, corporate meetings, etc to see hlw Underwood could have more trust in him than others (understandably) and it causing friction on the staff. They are working on it.
I agree with all of this. I wasn't saying pay Gentry 1mil. I was simply saying Antigua and Chin are not bird in hand at this moment and they are not the only 2 recruiters with connections.Correct. There is a reason we are offering to triple OAs salary and not Gentrys
