Totally agree that there are many factors that drive a recruit's decision, but relationships are huge, and I believe OA was the deciding factor for these players. Now even though those were all good players for us (obviously will have to wait and see with Melendez) I wouldn't expect OA to be perfect in his recruiting, and I'm assuming this and possibly the fact that he just may not be cut out to be a head coach is why he failed at USF.
I agree that OA is an excellent recruiter, but we all need to keep in mind that in OA’s three years as a head coach, in which he was also recruiting his records were:
2014-2015 9-23
2015-2016 8-25
2016-2017. 6-7
I think there is more attracting players to UI than just OA such as BU, playing in the Big Ten, and UI itself.

It shouldn’t be a surprise Chin and Antigua are a hot commodity after Illinois’ recent success. How will they fill the position/positions? Will Whitman find the money and is Illinois really attractive to the big guys with options? If not, will they choose the right guys in the next tier? It’s kind of like recruiting the best players against those same programs. it’s been fun being relevant again. Let’s hope that’s a legitimate trend.

We need a little perspective here. 1) OA had a strong, pre-existing with the head coach of the gold standard of CB. 2) We are not losing ACs to an ISU level school. 3) We are looking to poach an AC from Oregon. Nothing to be ashamed of. Welcome to the Big Leagues, it's what we all squawked about for over a decade. Just enjoy the ride!

TIFWIW, I just talked with Cal as we were both getting a shave and a hot towel at a local barber. He said the reason that he is going to be able to bring on OA and Chin is because the Illinois basketball program is being dissolved in favor of a dog dancing team. Word is, legendary dog dancer, Hank Hill, has already accepted the position of head coach.

I have faith in Brad Underwood, and as much as I love Chin and OA, and want them to stay, I do think their leaving is somewhat overblown.

Brad Underwood is the reason our program has improved. Brad Underwood is the reason we are landing better recruits.

No offense to OA and Chin, but they may find that things are not so rosy in Lexington. Very different expectations from Urbana-Champaign. Overachieving in terms of landing recruits and finding diamonds in the rough may not translate to success at Kentucky.
I choose to believe that you actually are Josh Whitman.

I still haven’t completely given up hope that one or both may be back. Those “in the know” don’t seem to be too dialed into this situation.

Way to twist the knife in our back. And It's from our own paper. What kind of cred does this kid even have? Unreal.
Calling upon my memory of who gets jobs to write for the DI: upper middle class white kid from a “John Hughes Suburb” who is a marketing, comm or business major. Who failed to get into an Ivy or Stanford, and who now said they always wanted U of I as their first choice. They’re an ATO or a DKE or maybe a SAM, and they have a job waiting upon graduation.

Full disclosure: this cliche is 30 years old. It could be a lot outdated.

But the idea of a kid attending UI talking about Illinois’ ‘ceiling’ is laughable on its face. Pat them on their head and give them a participation trophy. They wrote a story.
