Weber and Groce both brought in Power 5 talent and we were ranked in the top 25 in the early 2010's. The issue was never really recruiting, it was roster construction. Let's also not act like Chin and OA were the only variables that changed recently.

We also don't know that we are losing the whole staff. The dust hasn't settled yet so we can't act like this is the end of our run. If we lose Chin and OA, let's see who we "poach" from other programs before thinking we are going back to the bottom 4 of the B1G.
Totally agree, we are on people's radar both to play here and coach here. I'm not saying we are place #1 but we are getting closer to...a destination. However # of coaches we need, we'll have a great group of studs to choose from to fill those needs. Also BU is as prepared as
any coach to fill these openings. Keeping our recruits and players will be huge.

The bigger question is why do all three coaches want to leave? That would seem to indicate some underlying issues.
But the biggest question is where have you read Gentry wants to leave. All I have read is Gonzaga has offered him a job.

Yeah, I'm not buying it (underlying issues). Why does anyone leave? Opportunity knocks. It's not like guys are leaving for chopped liver. These are elite jobs. We're in an upper tier, but we're not at the pinnacle.
Maybe true too. But if ALL three leave, I would think there is a little stink in the coaches room. Rare to lose all three. When one leaves, it seems it would be a prime opportunity for another to move up.

Not saying they aren't replaceable, but this hurts continuity. The remaining staff must be on full damage control as parents have to raise an eyebrow. It must hurt recruit relationships at least some. Again, not insurmountable, but if Chin is gone and Gentry too, the hill just got a little steeper.

I agree 100 %. Anyone questioning these moves are not true Illini Fans, but rather trolls. Illini are rising with Whitman and Underwood and will continue to rise. Get used to it. We are BACK !!!!!

Middle to lower tier. There is not enough sustained success the last 15 years to place us in an upper tier. We rarely land the 5 star player. We rarely land All Americans. We have 0 S16 appearance the last 15 years. Average program right now? Yes. Upper Tier? Not a chance.

You can be an Illini fan and operate in reality. Let's pump the brakes on the We're Back language as well. We are poised to lose Ayo, Kofi, Miller, and 2 or 3 assistants. I'd prefer some success in the NCAA tourney on a consistent basis before we declare "We're Back"

Was there any scuttlebutt about our coaches leaving before Kentucky came calling or before Gonzaga lost their 20-yr assistant coach / HC-in-waiting to Arizona? I don't recall seeing anything about other open jobs before all that happened. I agree, seems like opportunity knocking to me, more than a sign of problems.

UK has had their eye on bringing Oa back for at least a couple years.

The Chin thing came out of left field to me. I really hope he’s not taking a recruit with him.

I think Podz is on the same level of Ayo and UK did not like him choosing is over them.

I'm ready for a championship. Win Chicago...eventually win a championship. It's time.
No one ever wins Chicago. Even the blue bloods/national powers don't win Chicago. Chicago is in it for Chicago 99% of the time and those players will find whatever is best for them. Unless they come out and say they want to form a college Dream Team (I know it's not happening in case anyone thinks I'm actually serious), I'm leery of putting all our focus on just Chicago.

My guess is either Cal asked OA for names or Cal was already interested in Chin an O vouched for him in either scenario. My guess is Chin sold his MIF connections and all of the 23/24 talent to land the offer. And let’s face it, Chin has a better shot at landing those kids at UK.

Hutch is the second coming of Jordan and Pods is going to be a first team All American as a junior, they should give us the National championship now.

This is what I am struggling with. We are coming off a season where we basically won the B1G, won the BTT, and were a 1 seed in the dance and seem poised to maintain our momentum. So I ask myself how many comparable teams in similar situations would lose 3 assistant coaches to non-hc moves when money ultimately doesn't seem to be the issue? It makes me think that the underlying issue is BU and that scares the hell out of me.

In the case of OA to KU...and I guess Chin now.....you are talking about a whole different level of recruiting freedom that you are just not going to get here. I can totally understand the attraction of that.

If I am an incoming recruit that has just been sold on this program by OA or Chin...and then watch them bolt shortly after the most successful year for the program in over a decade..I'm asking questions. Now these questions could be directed at those recruiters....or at the program....I don't know how they feel about it obviously...but there are damn sure questions that will need to be answered.

I hope OA and Chin are leaving with a strong message to these recruits regarding our program.

Seriously... Like all of us in the real working world. A larger more financial secure company came offering us more money and a better work environment. Our current employer countered but it was to late. Its Kentucky and Gonzaga who came offering. Hmmmm!! I would take that new job everyday!

Hire two good replacements and move forward.
