People keep throwing out names for potential new ACs and the names seem to center round recruiters and alums. Obviously recruiting is huge, but what about the actual coaching/player development aspects? OA and Chin seemed to have checked the latter boxes as well as the former — and within two different groups, big men and guards. Using the most recent potential staff listed above — Frazier, Mennenga, Daniyal Robinson — is there expertise coaching big men as well as guards in that group? Again, recruiting is huge, but when putting together our wish list for new staff members we have to remember player development.

Funny question to this situation, but if I am a kid being recruited by Chin and he has blatantly lied to me about my recruitment why in the world would I want to follow him to KY? Yes I know its KY but once a liar always a liar.. Think personally I would believe more what BU has told me than Chin.

Would UK take Podz? I’m thrilled we got him and think he has the chance to be very good, but based on his level of competition I feel like we had some questions about his ability to compete at this level. Just seems like too big of a stretch for UK to me. Hope I’m right!

Kentucky offered Podz a scholarship during the recruiting, so I would say, yes they would. Now, when he committed Podz said he was 110% committed, so...well, I don't know.

Who knows: Podz. they are not happy about the Chin situation. At all. They have their reasons. Brad is communicating with them, and I still think Podz will stay. Podz would be the only one I could see leaving at this point...........

Is the “Chin situation,” they’re mad because he left and they feel lied to

OR

They’re mad because they feel their guy wasn’t treated right and that’s why he left

Especially because Chin — the man you have a great connection with — convinces you to choose Illinois over Kentucky. I’m guessing his pitch wasn’t “yes, Kentucky is better in every way except for fact they don’t have me.” So how after selling Illinois over Kentucky, can he keep a straight face in saying KY is better place/fit for Podz? And why would Podz and his family believe him? Even if his dream was to play at Kentucky, following someone who “lied” to him there just seems very odd. But I don’t have any idea what goes on in the minds of 17-20 year olds.

There are many interested AC candidates, including some alumni. Some of the names you've heard, and some you have not. We should hear some things very soon, and other things later. Gentry very much might go to Gonzaga unless he stays here. Many people are saying that all of the players are staying, except for the ones who might leave. They have reasons that I cannot detail now but will if those reasons are reported on another board. The situation remains fluid. Kofi might return, but he also might stay in the draft. And we are sitting well with many of the rumored transfers! #insidersarcasm #siryachtgotnothingonme #lightenupimjustjoking

Not only these 3 are proven good recruiters, each are well versed in player development, particularly from what I know about former ISU Redbirds/ISU Cyclones coach Daniyal Robinson with the bigs and Chet Frazier with the guards.

Not sure I would say that Chin lied....maybe more like I'm recruiting for U of I....and I can tell you it's a great place that will help you become the player you hope to become...great program with good people on staff and a ton of talent coming in that you would help become something special....people come and go within any great program...(ex: Ayo....possibly Kofi..) but the program is solid and getting better...coming to Illinois you can be a part of one of the best up and coming programs in the country

I agree with quite a bit of what I’ve read...lots of interesting takes. My feeling is that BU must be telling the recruits that they have seen the level of AC’s that are hired at UI, and they will replace OA and Chin with the same level of expertise.

Losing OA and Chin is bound to have an effect (at least temporarily) on the program....but I'm going to say that Fletch has had a very important part in the development of especially our bigs and even our guards....some argue the X and O's will be missing with these people leaving.....but I'm thinking our strength and condition program along with the player development that many of our players have made over the past few years... that Fletch is a strong part of the overall recruiting process and helps more than people realize in helping with the X and O's part as well

Since Chin told them he wasn’t going anywhere, while he was actively pursuing going somewhere and ending up going somewhere, they should be pissed at Chin and no one else.

I have not read anywhere that he was being actively pursued while convincing players to commit to Illinois. Nor have I read that he told recruits he wasn't going anywhere. People get offered jobs all the time and sometimes they take them. We don't need to read anything nefarious into this.

He told them on Wednesday during the first week he wasn’t going anywhere. He was in contact with a couple different schools, plus Kentucky. He can take a job anywhere he wants, he doesn’t need to lie to the family about it.

I agree with this, but also assume a big part of his pitch was based on Chin's specific guard development skills, most likely pitching Ayo's development as a big part of that. If Podz was excited to specifically to work with Chin, and had been pitched with working with Chin would help him get to the NBA, then I could see how he would be upset Chin is leaving, and still want to follow him. I am 100% speculating here, not an insider, at all.

I think the X's and O's is actually staying. That's Gentry and BU IMO. It was said on Tay and Piper that there was some friction amongst the staff that while not the driver, could've been a contributor to the decision to leave. Not sure who he was eluding to.

Yeah, this part confuses me. The rumors were vaguely referencing friction between OA/Chin and Gentry. If that is true, with OA/Chin leaving I am confused why Gentry would also leave.
