"If Orlando wasn't so good, he wouldn't be so good." I don't know how official these rankings are, but whether OA is the #1 assistant or the #11, the point is he's a terrible loss for UI basketball, obviously. Kentucky and Illinois weren't in a bidding war over a papier-mache reputation.
It's only a terrible loss if Underwood doesn't hire an assistant known for their recruiting or someone he hires doesn't live up to their reputation as a recruiter.

This may tie back to BU's style preference. I thought BU said that he prefers talent that will be here for 2-3 years vs. 1-and-done. If so, Antigua was pretty spot on. Antigua's prior success at KY helps demonstrate that it was not a fluke. The players he recruited, and more importantly, the ones he helped develop did well in both cases. As per my prior post, I believe that OA is a great recruiter of big men because they know he is a great big man development coach.

I support BU's style of preferring 2+ years:
1) I believe that on average teams using 2-and-done players will beat teams relying on 1-and-done's.
2) I prefer watching good team play to 1:1 highlights. If I wanted to watch 1:1 highlights, I'd watch the NBA.
3) A player whose primary concern is looking good to get drafted higher is an active negative for me. THT was an example of this.
I think the one and done model will generally fade for the following reasons:

1.G league development option will take more of the Jalen Greens out of the reach of UK, KU and Duke...

2. Euro youth semi pro academies... Luka Doncics' start their Euro semipro youth academies as 16 yr olds, develop and transition to nba draft picks

I know each time this is brought up the OP needs to duck, but now that we have a slot open why not take Tre Mitchell's uncle and figure out how you get to replace him when Tre is goes pro. We look like we are caught without really good options and playing the game looks better and better. I hope the door is at least still cracked on Tre. Look at his kid and envision him in Underwood's offense. (duck)

Well that would be his step dad you’re referencing and because we don’t need to do that.

Mitchell’s good but if you do this you better get the other assistant coaches on board because they are going to have to do the job that Bergeron apparently can’t do. Nobody seems to want Bergeron, that should tell you something.
I don’t think Chester and Brad are going to “vibe” with the bedazzled suits. Brad is trying to create a culture and Bergeron doesn’t fit.

Dude can recruit like hell and develop talent. FSU has been such a good program recently and it sounds like Cy has been a huge part of that. This would be a dream hire.
Agree. This is my #1 option too. Would be fantastic alongside Frazier

Definitely not a replacement big man coach for OA. Not sure if an issue.

So C.Y. Young definitely looks like he would be an awesome hire! I know we drink the orange kool-aid on here, but why I’m wondering why he would he leave for anything less than a HC position? It would have to be money and and associate HC position I guess. Florida State has been really successful lately and it seems like he would have less of a hurdle with their admissions, weather, and not having to navigate Chicago.

not sure if an issue is say goodby to kids like frazier, curbello, Kofi, Padilla, BBV, Melendez, and Plummer who were all influenced by OA's broad international ties. If you cut out this niche market our future rosters could look pretty thin on talent.

Yeah because there's no way a different AC could carve his own "niche market".....

He seems to have bounced around a lot. Maybe he didn’t get a HC offer he wanted. Sometimes people want a new challenge or a change of scenery. Could be any number of things man, don’t overthink it.
