Director of Basketball Operations, Asst. Director of Basketball Operations, Assistant to the Head Coach, Director of Recruiting and Scouting, etc. are all the same thing, a non recruiting staff position. Different teams call them different names, but the position is defined by the head coach in a manner that will assist him in achieving his goal, to win games. Billy Gillispie hired Jerrance as an Asst. DOBO at Kentucky so he could drive Billy around so he wouldn't get a DUI. Had a different title, but did the same thing at TAM. I like the fact that you have a staff person that can relate to the players. I'm sure part of the job is to handle the on campus recruiting visits and I think it will be beneficial to have a 24 year old meeting with the recruits.

I've read through the pros and cons of the TU hire thoroughly on the thread and my neck is now sore from following the Wimbledonesque volley. A major question, one I believe is the fundamental one, remains unanswered here:

Are his coaching growth plates still open?

I surmise they indeed are, even if he's a less-athletic Larry Bird.

I'm riding the Black Sabbath crazy train today, listening to their first album now, with Paranoid and Masters of reality on deck and in the hole....

Life is great....If Nick Irvin is hired , then an even greater day....But if he's not, it's still gonna be a great day....Got back earlier from Office Max with a new computer chair, replacing my 12 year old chair , so life is greater than I thought..........

Don’t forget…cubit hired his son as QB coach, full time assistant. Add that to miles smith.

It seems pretty straightforward in my mind.

If we're adding this as a new entry-level position that wasn't previously staffed then great; adds bodies to help with the grunt work and hopefully gets TU started where he can quickly transition outside BU's protective bubble in the next few years.

However, if this is a replacement for the Assistant to the Head Coach or whatever Alexander used to hold then I have serious concerns.

I'm expecting (hoping?) the 3rd on court assistant coach will be filled soon enough and also Alexander's prior non-recruiting (but more senior position) will be filled by Irvin or someone of similar ilk (some real experience, but not enough to take a full AC spot).

That approach would mean expanding the staff and adding resources which would be great.

Time will tell...

Lighten up Francis. I hadn't done the research but this was a backhanded way of me agreeing that TU didn't take any meaningful minutes from anyone. I love our little Bunny as much as anyone, but he could lose minutes to the Gatorade girl and I wouldn't lose sleep.
Nice try. Eat that crow you just got served pal

I'm ok with TU being hired to this position. Think he's a great hire in that role.

But I'm also a little concerned about the potential future consequences of hiring the head coach's son. TU clearly sees a future for himself in coaching. So after he's been in this role a few years, will he be expecting a promotion to a recruiting assistant? That could be a potential issue, and expecting BU to objectively evaluate his own son is expecting too much, in my opinion as a father. Eventually I'm sure TU would have joined his father's staff as an assistant, and been well deserving. I can't help but think it would have been better for all parties if he proved himself elsewhere first. Maybe he still will and take a promotion somewhere else before returning.

What were Geoff Alexander's duties? I have no idea and I doubt that more than 5 posters on here do either. Underwood and Alexander have a long term relationship and Underwood put Alexander in that position to continue to work with him. When an assistant's position came open, he hired Alexander. Bill Self doesn't have an Asst. to the HC, neither does Coach K. If this position is primarily responsible for the head coach's summer camps, Tyler is capable of handling that. Alexander also did some scouting and again, I'm sure Tyler could do that as well. From what I'm told about Coleman's scouting reports, I'm confident that Tyler could do a better job.

Why does it matter if Tyler is promoted to one of the 3 assistants? If Illinois is winning, no big deal. If they aren't, Underwood will be shown the door. When an AD hires a head coach, the expectation is that the head coach will win. If he accomplishes that, he could have the 3 Stooges as his assistants and it would't matter. The things people worry about.

Good things ahead. The speculation and over analysis on here is becoming counterproductive. I’m calling for more GIFs and less commentary. :)

pruman, your time to shine is now. :)
