You say this is very common but how common is it at the University of Illinois? I don't know the answer but I do know that the policy manual states:

No individual shall initiate or participate in institutional decisions involving a direct benefit (initial employment, retention, promotion, salary, leave of absence, etc.) to a member of the individual’s immediate family. “Immediate family” includes an individual’s spouse, civil union partner, ancestors and descendants, all descendants of the individual’s grandparents, and the spouse or civil union partner, of any of the foregoing. Each chancellor/vice president shall develop, for the approval of the president, university procedures to insure against such conflict of interest.

Article IX, Section 2 Employment of Relatives

This being Illinois there is almost certainly an exception for some.
so obviously BU could not sign off on this...do you think TU is not more qualified than most?

Yeah, 100. If this was for 3rd assistant, big deal but this is to me a good promotion. TU has been at e different programs and is a smart basketball mind. Good spot for entry level.
Agree but think that timing is a factor. If third assistant was already announced and or hired and then we were notified of tu it would have been a lot different.

Zach may well disagree……
If he does, I will remind him that Zach logged more minutes in 20/21 than TU. (22 v 16)
I will also let him know that Tyler only saw the court in 7 games logging 16 minutes.
I’m guessing Zach will also know that of the 16 minutes Tyler was on the floor, 9 of those minutes were played with Zach.
Zach did play in 2 fewer games, but that was when he was injured. The remaining 7 minutes that Tyler played was while Zach was recovering from his foot injury. I know he will remember that darn boot he was hobbling around in.

Good try though trying to make this into a negative BretBeachHouse
Lighten up Francis. I hadn't done the research but this was a backhanded way of me agreeing that TU didn't take any meaningful minutes from anyone. I love our little Bunny as much as anyone, but he could lose minutes to the Gatorade girl and I wouldn't lose sleep.

If anyone can tell me why TU isn’t qualified I’m all ears. IMO this is a fine hire and a good start to a coaching career. He will not be there long before moving onwards and upwards.
This +1

No problem with the hire, but I won’t fault those still dealing with the distrust associated with the football inside hire and will wait patiently and hope that Tyler thrives in his new role.

No problem.
Does this mean we’re done for the day serge?

I can't find any information on the position that TU got existing previously. I'm all in on more staffers being available to help with recruiting and scouting.

Maybe the title is a bit much, but it doesn't seem like TU is taking the spot from a more qualified candidate. Of course there are probbaly more qualified candidates out there, but I think this type of position might have been created specifically to get TU out on the trail while we wait for AC3. Hiring an outsider who would be severely under qualified as a recruiting assistant to be on the road for the next month or two would be more detrimental long term than to just give TU the position and waiver.

Yes nepotism is involved, but I think this was extremely well thought out at the very least. Win win situations all around.

Yeah, this is not a Miles Smith situation in which Tyler is taking an Assistant Coaching spot, but an additional spot that helps both Tyler and the university. I did not like Tyler getting as many minutes as he did his first year here, but after that I feel like Tyler has been an asset. Can translate what coach is saying to the younger players that sometimes get tired of hearing it from Brad (you know like any parent telling their kid) while learning some of the nuances that coaches know. I feel like it is a win/win type in this scenario other than not trying to hire outside of family.

I never understood the hate on Tyler getting those minutes in 2018-2019. He played 69 minutes the whole year. In comparison, Samson played 25min and the lowest minutes for a scholarship player was 87min - Samba Kane.

It's not like Brad thought he was one of the best players. He was often in because he could be relied on to not mess up. Not like he was an offensive threat. It also (to me) was to send a message to other players on the roster. What was the result? Minimal attrition and we had one of our best years after.

Can't answer that. I'd take a shot if you could post the job description or even the ad for the opening. Would you say that he is more qualified than the person who previously had the job or the others who applied for the opening?

I'm with you, I didn't understand why folks got upset but if you were in the game threads when he entered the game some folks were clearly disturbed.

The thought was to give more minutes to higher upside guys like Alan Griffin. I'm sure Alan played a lot of minutes that year so please don't post it but I think some people would have rather us played guys who had a brighter future than Tyler

I think this goes back to fans thinking too long term and not short term. Coaches are here to win now. Not give players minutes because you're scared they'll transfer. As we've seen this year, it doesn't matter if you start an entire season, people transfer. Just win.

I don’t know if it was linked (and sorry I don’t link things), but read Werner’s free article on 247 about Tyler’s hiring if you haven’t. It mentions all the analytics and game prep work he was doing behind the scenes this past year. Sounds like he basically used this year as an internship as well as being a walk-on. Would another player who wasn’t the coach’s son been able to do that? I have no idea; maybe not. But here’s a guy who took that upon himself to get that experience and presumably did a good job with good follow through. Plus he’s been around the HC as a player for 5-6 years, and is an Illinois alum. And though I don’t know the responsibilities of the job, I get the sense it is largely logistical and keeping track of ACs and BU’s recruiting moves management and such. All that considered doesn’t look like a bad hire at all.

Homerun hire for this position! These positions are usually filled by those that were GA/team managers with no playing experience.

The players LOVE this guy, respect his basketball mind, and has been like a coach for a number of years on and off the court.

He will connect greatly with recruits and able to dissect film.

My only concern is him separating from players on his professional level and friendship level.

we always discuss the hypothetical scenario where we offer a 5* recruit’s lower-rated friend in order to secure the 5*. Or set up a family member of a 5* with a job somewhere.

Regardless of TU’s qualifications, BU is a 5* and we need to keep him happy
