Did Lovie's son attend the University of Illinois? Did Lovie's son play college ball at Illinois? Was Lovie's son respected as a teammate by other players at Illinois? Was Tyler hired for an assistant coaching job? I think you're stretching quite a bit to say that these two situations would remind you of one another.
This right here.

If any other four-year walk on who played minimal minutes without major screw ups was given this position, the "We need an alumn!" crowd would be thrilled.

Y'all are just mad to be mad at this point.

At least we don't have to pay TU the AC3 money. Now we have money to burn without having to fill that slot.

Funny I remember a lot of you being excited hearing the current players were happy and enjoying Tyler Underwood being around the team still.

Some people just love to hate when itā€™s convenient.

I think it's mostly attributed to the aftertaste from the Lovie and Miles Smith fiasco. If that had never happened I bet we wouldn't be hearing these complaints.

Give the kid a chance. If he sucks it will show. If he hits a homerun it will be a blessing. He certainly knows his dad's mind.

Not hardly. Keep what up? I cannot remember Lou Henson's kid coaching here, or Bill Self's, why do people on here just look to the negative on everything? Lovie hiring his kid and we wont count Cubit as that fiasco was a joke has nothing to do with this. TU has been a coach in waiting and he looks like a nice hire for the position. TU is respected by the players and has been around quality coaches his entire life. Eddie Sutton hired 2 of his sons to his staff, Bob Knight hired his son, what is the big deal? I trust BU here as he has earned our trust. He has probably seen the inter workings of recruiting in his 6 years of being around his dad. I knew he would hire on somewhere on the staff.
While it's true that Lou never hired his own kids he did hire his nephew (Mark Coomes).

I know this announcement is gonna get hate regardless, but remember this is for a supporting role. Miles Smith was given an Assistant position. Not the same situation.

Nepotism undeniably played a part, but the whole "someone more qualified" argument disregards that this is an entry role. It's very common for people within an organization to get these type of opportunities - no matter what we perceive as "qualified". I've been given similar chances in organizations I've been a part of even though I'm sure they would've found a more "qualified" candidate had they done an official search
You say this is very common but how common is it at the University of Illinois? I don't know the answer but I do know that the policy manual states:

No individual shall initiate or participate in institutional decisions involving a direct benefit (initial employment, retention, promotion, salary, leave of absence, etc.) to a member of the individualā€™s immediate family. ā€œImmediate familyā€ includes an individualā€™s spouse, civil union partner, ancestors and descendants, all descendants of the individualā€™s grandparents, and the spouse or civil union partner, of any of the foregoing. Each chancellor/vice president shall develop, for the approval of the president, university procedures to insure against such conflict of interest.

Article IX, Section 2 Employment of Relatives

This being Illinois there is almost certainly an exception for some.

Or it's plausible that BU wanted to make the hire, then passed it onto his staff and/or Whitman's office to make a decision on whether it is warranted. I'm sure someone did their due diligence because this is such an easy conflict of interest situation that I just don't imagine it could have escaped unnoticed.

Zach Griffith disagrees with you.
Zach may well disagreeā€¦ā€¦
If he does, I will remind him that Zach logged more minutes in 20/21 than TU. (22 v 16)
I will also let him know that Tyler only saw the court in 7 games logging 16 minutes.
Iā€™m guessing Zach will also know that of the 16 minutes Tyler was on the floor, 9 of those minutes were played with Zach.
Zach did play in 2 fewer games, but that was when he was injured. The remaining 7 minutes that Tyler played was while Zach was recovering from his foot injury. I know he will remember that darn boot he was hobbling around in.

Good try though trying to make this into a negative BretBeachHouse

I have no issue with TU getting this gig but my experience has been that like most things at the university, especially employment performance, that rule is there on a need-to-use basis. As long as no boats are rocked, nobody will enforce it or give a sh!t.
