Here are a couple articles that illustrate how Tyler has brought value to this program both directly, and through his own personal connections.
Thanks for posting. I listed some quotes that caught my eye. Note he's worked with Gentry a lot. I believe this new role has been a long time coming. Sounds like he approached last year from the standpoint of being a Coach and not a player. I'd go as far as to say last year was an unpaid Internship

"Tyler Underwood said he does post-game breakdowns on the offensive end with Gentry while charting offensive efficiency and other analytics on a team that is head over heels for advanced metrics. Gentry lets Underwood in on how he sees the game, which is helpful given Gentry is one of the main voices behind an Illinois offense that ranks seventh among Division-I teams in offensive efficiency, according to KenPom."

"Coach Gentry told me, ‘I’m going to put more on your plate this year from a coach’s side. This could be a great year for you to really start getting into that mode, still as a player, but kind of get a head start,'" Tyler Underwood said"

I'm ok with TU being hired to this position. Think he's a great hire in that role.

But I'm also a little concerned about the potential future consequences of hiring the head coach's son. TU clearly sees a future for himself in coaching. So after he's been in this role a few years, will he be expecting a promotion to a recruiting assistant? That could be a potential issue, and expecting BU to objectively evaluate his own son is expecting too much, in my opinion as a father. Eventually I'm sure TU would have joined his father's staff as an assistant, and been well deserving. I can't help but think it would have been better for all parties if he proved himself elsewhere first. Maybe he still will and take a promotion somewhere else before returning.
Highly unlikely. What probably happens is Brad reaches out to one of his buddies that is a coach and gets Tyler the bump up to AC. Brad has a lot of connections at different levels from his own coaching career.

Anyone worrying about TU being hired must be imagining that he will be some kind of shot caller operating on his own. He will be mentored the entire time and as he proves he can handle a certain aspect of his job responsibilities they will become less supervised. He seems like an ideal, trustworthy, hardworking and intelligent young man who probably knows more about the game, the schemes and the work needed to succeed and flourish. Now go and worry about who the new mascot is going to be because that's really a cause for concern since we have been without one for so long that the recruits are questioning our commitment to win!!!

There is some nepotism at play here, but I would argue it was when he was granted a spot on the roster when BU was hired.

Beyond that, we hired a former walk-on as a head assistant and he seems more then qualified for the job.

It's gotta be tough being a coach's kid, but I don't think I ever saw TU in a game situation that he wasn't able to handle, nor do I think he took a single second of PT away from someone else who needed it.

People acting like this is a McAffery situation where the sons were (IMO) taking playing time they don't deserve.

Nobody should be judged negatively just because they are related to somebody. Yes, many times a new hire for a position got it just because of ‘knowing the right people’ (and ultimately, they didn’t deserve the position in the first place). But not in every case, everywhere. Each person needs to be considered as an individual and his/her performance evaluated upon its own record.

Illini Nation should cheer any hiring of someone who understands what roundball means to the State of Illinois and the great tradition it has as one of the top legacy programs in the game. Coach speaks of this often, and he wants guys around him who believe and appreciate this as much as he does. Knowing what you’re doing and having passion for Illini ball... these are the two job requirements.

Check out all the player comments and how they’re congratulating Tyler. The players love him and I’m sure he’s been studying dads game planning for more than the last few years. He came off the bench to demonstrate what was expected in the first couple of years. He knows dad’s expectations and I think he’ll do well in this capacity.
Good Luck Tyler

Don’t forget…cubit hired his son as QB coach, full time assistant. Add that to miles smith.
It went further with Cubit. He elevated his son to offensive coordinator with the highest salary on the staff, more that the NFL guy we had on the defensive side.
As for Miles Smith, Lovie waited a long time to fill vacancies. We thought he was sifting through resumes of stellar applicants. After a very long time, Lovie named himself defensive coordinator and hired his son as LB coach. Not what this message board had hoped for. How the Texans could fall for this I just don't know.

Why does it matter if Tyler is promoted to one of the 3 assistants? If Illinois is winning, no big deal. If they aren't, Underwood will be shown the door. When an AD hires a head coach, the expectation is that the head coach will win. If he accomplishes that, he could have the 3 Stooges as his assistants and it would't matter. The things people worry about.
If who is hired to assistant coaching positions doesn't matter, why does this thread exist?

This would be ideal. I'm all for Tyler getting this position, and all for him as a future AC. Just think it's not necessarily a good look for all of it to happen under his dad. Might not look great, even if he is the most deserving candidate at every step.

Pat McCaffery was a top 100 recruit. Connor was 150.

Here I am someone defending Iowa. Gross.

The thought was to give more minutes to higher upside guys like Alan Griffin. I'm sure Alan played a lot of minutes that year so please don't post it but I think some people would have rather us played guys who had a brighter future than Tyler

Seems rather specific to just be relaying what some other people may have thought.

I don’t care what it looks like if it helps bring results. He’s been a player/coach for 3 years and my guess is he is going to have a bright future. Who knows? Maybe bright enough that in 10-15 years we’re hoping he’ll consider us for our head coach vacancy. (And I understand this is getting way out ahead of myself, but it’s not inconceivable).

I mean my point here is that the stink of nepotism would negatively impact the program. I'm not worried about the optics because I care about this stuff in a vacuum. If Tyler were to hypothetically become an AC, a big part of the job is selling the program to recruits. If there is a perception you got there because your daddy pulled some strings, whether fair and accurate or not, I can't imagine that helps you sell it.

I understand where you’re coming from, but I think his age, his personality, his ability to relate to the players, plus his experience at SFA, Okie State, and UIUC makes the nepotism issue irrelevant to recruits. In fact, he might have some cache. A call from an “Underwood” might carry some weight vs. an AC whose name I’ve never heard. If a recruit talks to Tyler they know Dad is getting g an update tonight at dinner.

The time stamp on your post was after midnight , so legally, the guarantee by the absent copypasterologist is null and void....Don't play with my emotions man, I'll find you and make you wish you hadn't toyed with my AC3 fragile mindset.......Thinking my clown makeup and a dancing hullabaloo on your front lawn at midnight with Kool & the Gang musical background accompaniment....

Odd we haven't seen any copypasterology updates lately....Hope all is ok and he hasn't violated any copyright laws as stated by the FBI......
