What are the odds Jim leaves scUM. He loses a lot of talent and will have to rebuild. I am sure scUM will reload with the transfer portal but there are a lot of needs. Might as well try the NFL again
You're absolutely right. And if the NFL doesn't work out (again), he just returns to Michigan (again). Nice to have options.

You say this like the NFL didn't work out last time. It has worked out everywhere Harbaugh has gone.
He was great with the 49ers. Jed York didn't like him and instead of just getting along with him, he fired him after an 8-8 season when 15 of their starters were on IR. He was 49-22-1 in 4 seasons. That includes 5-3 in the playoffs.

He's a weird dude, but he's a great coach. I hate Michigan, I hate that Michigan cheated and then won, but he will instantly be a top 5 coach in the NFL.

not sure about top 5, but top 10 for sure

Bill Belichick
Sean Payton
Sean McVey
John Harbaugh
Andy Reid
Mike Tomlin

all come to mind right away

but I agree , as weird as he is , he can coach the game very well at any level

Definitely - and seemed to find the secret sauce, starting in Year 7. After going 49-22 in the first 6 years, went 40-3 in Years 7-9 and a Natty in Y9.

Big improvement!

This is an interesting stat for those who have any doubts about where we are after 3 years.

“After going 49-22 in the first 6 years, went 40-3 in Years 7-9 and a Natty in Y9.”

That’s at Michigan.

We'd need to go 31-3 over the next 3 years just to get to that 49-22 over the first 6 seasons. I'm not optimistic.

Odds he leaves ? Pretty high …

He’s really good buddies with Ed Dodds (Colts assistant GM)… He just interviewed for GM with Chargers today …

I think they both likely end up there …

Historical standards matter.

In the 20 years leading up to the Harbaugh hire, Michigan was 176-80 with a 69% winning percentage. In Harbaugh’s first 6 years, Michigan went 49-22 which is also a 69% winning percentage. So Harbaugh’s first 6 years were pretty much in line with the historical standards of Michigan.

In the 20 years leading up to the Beliema hire, Illinois went 81-130 with a 38% winning percentage. In Beliema‘s first 3 years, Illinois has gone 18-19 which is a 48% winning percentage, 10 points higher than the 20 year average. I imagine if we looked at conference only, the improvement would be even more stark.

I feel like a great goal for the program throughout the rest of the 2020’s is a 58% winning percentage. That’s 7-5 on average with some 8-4’s and 6-6’s sprinkled in. That would be 20 points higher than our previous 20 year average and would be a great building block towards a sustainably successful program.

Well if we want to be historical about it, from 1920 to 1929, Illinois football went 55-19-3 for a 71% winning average. Sad to think that we once were a powerhouse...
Seriously though, appreciate your analysis.

Bill O'Brien hired as OC at OSU. Sounds as if move is mostly going to be for Day to give up offensive playcalling duties.

No word on what the role of last year's OC Brian Hartline will be going forward.

Expect Hartline to stay on board ... Co-OC ... Just not going to be calling plays with more of an emphasis on recruiting ... With OC pay ...

i played for harbaugh (and Shaw) for one season at USD. No doubt harbaugh is nutty, but he’s highly demanding while also being fair. Those who perform in practice are the ones that will get playing time, didnt matter how heavily you were or weren’t recruited initially. Personally I saw the method behind the madness when we’d be up 6 scores by halftime, the winning made it a lot of fun. I think his philosophy with his uncompromising football values are why he’s he’s had success every place he’s been. Additionally, while very demanding internally, he always has his players’ backs. Be it an uncalled cheap shot from the other team, the media, or school administration. That breeds loyalty amongst the players and the suffering from his demanding nature breeds comraderie within the team. I’ve always been a fan of the harbaughs since.

He lives and breathes nothing but football, and I would consider him an ‘old school’ coach that only adapted to modern times as much as he needed to, no more, and apparently begrudgingly at times. Also, from what I hear, there is more to the ‘cheating’ scandal than is currently in the mainstream public media. I guess Ryan day has been behind the scenes on that, something like the law firms and initial reporters involved have connections with him. That info came from an insider at Michigan, so I’ll leave it up to others to decide the validity of that.

Bill O’Brien has an interesting track record had success his first go around in New England 2007-2011. Did ok for PSU and with the Texans. Had success at Bama

I don’t think this will be a long term stop and it will be interesting to see if his pro style works in Columbus
