I mean all of these qualities describe Lovie he's just not super loud about it and hasn't had the success we expect

Honestly don't care what a HC's personality is as long as they're not scummy and can win more football games than they lose.
I don't think Lovie brings half the qualities I listed, three for sure from the "givens" bucket and several of the others are definitely not there. I feel like Guenther and Thomas made the wrong, uninspired fb coaching choices by looking for or prioritizing the wrong attributes. Jury is still out on Josh's ability to hire for fb. At the time of the hire and the realistic options we had, Josh could have struck gold with Lovie, but turned out the opposite unfortunately.

At the end of the day, you're not wrong. Just need to win games. (y)

What do you guys think about Marcus Freeman DC for Cincinnati?
Nope waaaaay to green and would be a huuuuge risk

If I were a coach being considered for this job, one thing I’d want is some kind of assurance that the admissions people will loosen up and work with me more than they did with my predecessor. How many splashy recruits and transfers have we ended up having to toss back in recent years because we couldn’t get them on campus? Competitive power-5 programs aren’t dealing with this nonsense and it’s a real detriment that must be addressed.

Tony Elliott would be an absolute slam dunk hire imo but already makes 1.6mil as an assistant at clemson. After the 12-1 first season with Scott Frost's team at UCF, Heupel has went 10-3 and now started 4-2 this year. Chris Petersen would be another great hire, but stepped down at Washington due to stress last year.
This is interesting. It sort of reminds me of the Beckman/Campbell situation. We took the guy with the initial success and he flopped meanwhile Campbell is doing great things at Iowa state. Heupel definitely has my attention.

1) how much does JW have to raise to cover both the buyout and enough of the new coach’s contract to actually be able to afford a move?

2) could he realistically raise it in this economic climate?

3) is our athletic budget in as dire of straits as I’m assuming due to covid?

1) He wouldn't have to necessarily raise money....a couple of the big big donors just pull out their check book and say here ya go.

2) Wouldn't raise it but if the buy out is covered the new coach would probably make around the same as Lovie depending on who the hire is.

3) I think every athletic department is losing money due to covid.

Ehhh, not sure about that. Lovie has many shortcomings, but the biggest IMO is that he does not surround himself with good people. His coaching staff is w/o question the worst in the Big 10, and that kills you in every aspect of coaching, from player development to game day decisions to recruiting.

Funny, this is almost word for word what several Bears fans told me about Lovie when we hired him. A lot of his staffing hires have turned out very poorly.

And here I remember being told Lovie had top of the league amounts of money to build his staff. Look what it got us.

So who would jw call? Coaches like Blake Anderson, Jamey Chadwell, Jeff Monken or Will Healy? Assuming Billy Napier turned down a baylor or miss st last year, hes not going to come here if we came calling. Or would he go with an up and coming cordinator? Just throwing obvious names out there like Grinch, Harrell leonhard or Briles even be intrested?

The most obvious coordinator would be Sark and I think he would listen. Good spot for a second chance.

I agree with this. I don’t love him personally but I think he would make us relevant. He’s a solid coach and a decent recruiter. I’m just sooo tired of getting our butts kicked.

Could you provide a list of those splashy recruits we had to toss back. Did they end up at other B10 programs?

Therein lies the problem. We hired him from a little league program that didn't even field a football team. His roladex was nearly devoid of coaching prospects outside of his contacts from his time as a player. Hopefully he has been building his network over the past five years.

I'm still a big advocate for craig Bohl. He has a track record of winning everywhere he goes, bringing assistants with him and building a winning culture.

That last point is what this program has been missing for a long time. There's a reason Wisconsin keeps winning despite a carousel of head coaches that can't win at other P5 schools. The program has a clear identity and it's become self sustaining. The hardest part is creating that identity and Craig Bohl does that very well.

The reason I like someone like Stark or Joe Moorehead is because they are going to be hungry to prove themselves a second time and bust their a$$ which is what we need here. Not someone who has had reasonable success and if it doesn't work here then no sweat to them they still have a decent resume and money.

I really don’t see Sark coming here. I think he’ll have his pick of places. So unless he wants someplace with possibly lower expectations/stress and he thinks Illinois is that, he’s likely not coming. Also, some have mentioned Chris Petersen, and I very much doubt he would have interest. I believe he stepped down in some part because of family heath issues. Just don’t see him leaving Pacific Northwest at least at this time and for this job.

Sark is an interesting case. Is Whitman and co. willing to take on some of the biggest baggage in the game? Not saying it should hold a ton of weight, but Sark screwed over an inherited top 10 all time offense when he was with the Falcons.

Entering the beggars cant be choosers territory here but I dont see anything on his resume that screams deserving a second chance, same with Moorhead. I will say I'm very impressed with Sarks record with QBs at the collegiate level.

I guess I'd label those hires good not great. Though that might be the ceiling of this next hire anyways. I actually think both of those guys are obtainable, but I do think Sark has more polish on him now.

I really like Moorehead, thought miss st pulled the trigger soon with him. I didn’t throw out his name or Sark earlier thinking theyll have better jobs offers if covid doesn’t hold alot of schools from making moves.

I get it. I think they are attainable this cycle at least. U of I wouldn't hire kendal just based on name alone whether fair or unfair to him but man that guy knows offensive football.

I honestly believe that at the end of this season, even if the team goes 0-9, the program will be in a better place then when Lovie came in. Not great, obviously, but better. New training facility, OK talent, stable administration, scandals receding into the historical mists, and the financial ability (probably) to offer a Top 20 salary. It's not a bad gig.

I really, really, really continue to think, however, that we need a "Midwest guy," to bolster recruiting long-term. Someone who truly believes the potential in the program and can sell it, rather than it being just a paycheck/stepping stone (i.e. Sark, Briles). I would prefer a younger guy with youthful energy/something to prove, and agree it should be someone known for his offensive mind. So, who is the football equivalent of Brad Underwood? ;-)
