If the goal is to pick the 4 best teams in the country, then Alabama definitely deserves it over Ohio State, I think.

Precisely. That's what this is all about.

Granted, the gap between Alabama and Ohio State isn't enormous. Alabama hasn't looked that dominant late in the season, and they're really banged up on defense. There is a valid argument for Ohio State. But at the end of the day, losing twice -- including a 31-point loss to Iowa -- was too much to overcome.

If Ohio State beat Wisconsin by 30+, perhaps they get in. Or, if Ohio State only lost to Iowa by 3, perhaps they get in. But, that didn't happen.

Agree 100% with everything you said here.

May as well get rid of conference championships. Two years n a row it does not matter.

Why not Wisconsin if you don't like Osu's two losses?

Because while "conference championships" is certain a criteria to weigh, it's not the only criteria. Ultimately, the best 4 teams are to be selected.

FWIW, the lines on both semifinal games are 1.5. Pretty good match ups.

Sorry for consecutive posts, but is this an argument for expanded playoffs? Maybe six? Three plays six, four-five and one-two get a bye?

The reality is, there are not more than 3 playoff worthy college football teams this year. Outside, of Clemson, Georgia and Oklahoma, the rest of the field is full of a bunch of teams with ugly losses. You could certainly expand the field, but what would you get? USC? Penn State? Ohio State? Not terribly exciting.

I think the committee got it right.

I think Alabama ends up with a pass and a default 4th because they don't risk losing a conference championship game. Bama wasn't playing well down the stretch. I'd say they were 3rd best in SEC

I think Wisky will have trouble with Miami if the dynamic Miami offense shows up.

First glance, bowl match ups look good for a Big Ten.*

OSU think is best match up for USC.

NU gets Kentucky??? Good for NU and Big, but wow.

Wisconsin Miami should be a contrast in styles, but Wisconsin continues to play their game and play it well.

Michigan S. Carolina, kinda meh

PSU wsu? Memory only if this is the match up, but I like that one.

Thoughts?

* only going by BTN crawl

Edit, Correction: PSU-Washington and MSU- WSU. Still think Big Ten matches up well there.

If the goal is to pick the 4 best teams in the country

The goal is to pick the two best teams in the country to play a championship game. There was always controversy over who the 2nd best team was, though, so they created a 4-team playoff.

That’s why this playoff nonsense doesn’t work either. It was supposed to end all controversy but it hasn’t and it won’t. People will always debate things. What it has done to the Big’s detriment is deny us a January 1 Rose Bowl. Call me what you will but a Big Ten champion playing in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day beats a playoff any day.

Should we ever again randomly surge to a NY6 bowl, you can pretty much guarantee that it will be a year that the Rose is a playoff game.

In 3 years of the playoff, there has been absolutely no question who the best team in the nation has been. That was the ultimate goal of this thing and in that sense, it's being achieved. There has never been any controversy, come the end of the championship game.

If anything, I think the fact that OSU didn't make it to the playoffs means the trickle down effect for that is that the B1G looks like the better matchup in every single one of their bowl matchups.

If I remember correctly, doesn't all of the bowl money that B1G schools receive go into one pot and then is evenly distributed to each conference member after travel expenses? Does anyone know how big of a (presumably) decrease in bowl money we are missing out on by not having a CFP partipant?

Nice that the U gets a home bowl game. I will be very surprised if Bucky pulls that one off.
