My reaction was almost the opposite. I would put the MVC as a good first head coaching job. They are in the 2nd tier leagues w/the American, and A10, and Mountain West. It isn't Power 6. It's as close as you get. Did the MVCs most recent membership changes -- the departure of Wichita State (10 years ago) and Loyola of Chicago(recent), and the addition of Murray State(recent) -- really drop them that much?
they also lost creighton in 2013 (can't believe it was 10 years ago). While they used to be a conference that was regularly a 2 bid league (16 times in 22 years between 1994-2016, and 3 bids or more 3 times during that period), I was surprised that Bradley, as the regular season champ and loser in the MVC tournament final this year, was immediately resigned to NIT discussion. Definitely don't think the conference is what it used to be

I forgot about Creighton. Yeah, that was a major loss for the conference. That also means the Wichita State departure had to be more recent, as Creighton was a solo departure. (wiki: WS left 6 years ago)

Bradley's lack of a bid is no surprise. Their schedule NC schedule was pretty weak. They played only a few good teams and lost by ~20 to each. The metrics have them near Nebraska. I suspect that is generous.

This was a bit of a down year, imo, but a guy like Powell would be super fortunate to get a first head coaching gig in the MVC. Generally (and with exceptions of course) the only way to have your first head job be at a Power Conference is if you are the "next man up" that takes over when a Coach retires (like Hubert Davis and Jon Scheyer). The Tommy Lloyd situation is generally when you paid your dues for a very very very long time (20 years under Mark Few in his instance) and passed up multiple head coaching opportunities along the way. Roy Williams was similar. Powell's resume/pedigree obviously isn't anywhere near that level, so if he got an opportunity in a solid Mid-Major Conference and felt he was ready for the challenge, that would be a great opportunity to prove his worth.

The conference you get your break in doesn't really matter. Underwood came from the Southland conference. Quick, someone name me a 2nd team from the Southland?

You should pick a school where you feel like you can succeed. If Roger thinks he has strong connections in a certain area, and a job in that area comes open, that's a good spot. Chester could do great in the MEAC because many of those schools are in his home area, where he knows coaches and can land players. 1 team from every school gets to go dancing. Make that tournament a couple years in a row, win a game, and you're now at the top of the list.

I don't think any 1 team conference is necessarily any better or worse than another.

I know it WBB but its interesting to look at latest Illini success story. Question is why didn't we hire somebody like her the first 3 times?

Shauna GreenHC 6 years at Dayton avg record 21-8 (4 A10 conference championships). Hit ground running first season 22-9 NCAA bid?

Prior hires
Jolette Law Rutgers Assistant. At Illinois 5 years no NCAA avg record 14-19
Matt Bollard WI-Green Bay HC Horizon league. At Illinois 5 years no NCAA avg record 12-19
Nancy Faehy- Wash U HC Div 3. At Illinois 5 years, no NCAA avg record 8-20

Hmm, without checking, Texas A&M CC, Northwestern State, Lamar, Incarnate Word, Stephen F. Austin (where Underwood was prior to OKState), Sam Houston State, errr... McNeese State I think?

EDIT: turns out Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State both left the Southland (along with two other Texas schools, Abilene Christian and UT-Arlington) for the WAC in 2021.

While each of the three prior hires had at least one positive, overall hiring each of them was a clear indication of UI's level of serious interest in their WBB program. Which is to say, not much.

I am in favor of starting the Brad coaching tree.

I imagine its hard to recruit to Pocatello

so are we going to have a whole new assistant staff again in the off season? Also have to think the former assistants that will not be named, now at Kentucky will be looking to get out and head to head coaching jobs..

Probably not a whole new staff.
I don't see Frazier as ready for an HC job, and I'd hope BU/JW would do everything reasonable to keep him from getting poached as an AC at another program. I don't think Anderson's name is going to come up for anything other than small conference jobs (I could be wrong), so that leaves Alexander, which could be likely.
