Shrewsberry to ND
I have to imagine PSU countered with everything they had and Shrews just wanted to be back at Indiana at what is perceived to be a better basketball school, no?? Because if Penn State was not getting together as much money as possible from their donors to try to hang on to a clearly up-and-coming coach that just brought their program back to life ... they blew it big time.

1.) That’s totally correct about Dallas…or Houston, Or San Antonio…or 99% of Texas. I don’t if I’d say that about Austin-Ian’s? tho…they seem quite happy to have their own identity…separate from the rest of Texas. But since they’re a: smaller city, the seat of government, and centrally located it’s harder for them to ignore the rest of Texas as it is for Chicago to ignore everything downstate.
2.) If they even know Illinois exists at all? Lol

The
As someone who was born in Peoria but moved to Iowa City when I was 8 (and did not move back to Illinois until I moved to Chicago in 2019), yet grew up with proud of being from Illinois in a sea of people INCREDIBLY proud to be from Iowa ... I cannot tell you how disappointing it was to start meeting people who grew up in Illinois as I got older and see exactly what you just described. I effectively grew up with the outlook of an Iowan but had the outlook shifted toward pride in Illinois. :ROFLMAO: So, I'm not saying there aren't good reasons for Illinoisans' attitudes, but it took the wind out of my sails, to be sure.

I get why people would complain about or be frustrated with Illinois, but people do that everywhere (to at least some extent) and yet so many other areas of the country have an inherent pride being from somewhere because if you don't, it's kind of a "pathetic" look ... like you're not proud of yourself. It's hard to explain, but I feel like a lot of Illinoisans assume everyone else knows all of the intricacies of our state government or something like that, so they like downplay Illinois to other people as if being proud of it would be an embarrassing look and this helps them save face ... but all they do is perpetuate us as a laughing stock to other people, as most outsiders' attitudes are "Wow, not even people FROM Illinois have pride in Illinois, that's weird and sad!" And then it's a vicious circle. I cannot stand when all of the other offices of my company across the country kind of "pump up" their locations during inter-office get togethers, and my boss craps all over Illinois. It's literally embarrassing, haha.

And make no mistake! More people growing up being proud to be from the State of Illinois has a very direct and very positive effect on Illini athletics.

Having grown up in CU and knowing players and following athletic very diligently for 50 years. If the program has a great coach and staff and ever consistently recruited the best players in the state. Then we can win title. I'm sick of the best players in Illinois going elsewhere more often than not. That didn't use to be the case.

Yeah, it's a bit skewed by them having a pretty big arena (18,809), so their average attendance was 12,428. Still, that is ninth in the conference. And of the five teams with a lower average attendance, three of them (Michigan, Northwestern and Rutgers) have arenas of 13,000 or less, and Minnesota was just terrible. The "embarrassing" ones here are Iowa (12,371) and especially Penn State (7,719), as both were pretty good and have capacities over 15,000.
Surprised to see that for iowa. The Hawkeyes are their biggest team with no pro sports. 2/3 of the state wears black and yellow, and the other third wears red and yellow.

Texas has other taxes (property/personal property) that make up a lot of that difference. The actual fully-burdened tax rate when you consider all forms of tax actually doesn't vary that much from one state to another (with some exceptions). One way or another, we all have to pay the man.
I lived just outside of Houston for four years, and while the Texas sales tax is Texas-sized, property tax in Texas is about half of that from Illinois. And every state adds hidden taxes disguised as "fees" that add to the burden, but there is a reason Kiplingers ranks Illinois as the least tax friendly state for middle income earners, and the burden only rises as incomes levels rise.

I live in NH now, and the tax burden (especially for retirees like me 😎) is ludicrous as everything is loaded on property taxes here. Politicians tout the "NH Tax Advantage" when in reality they shift almost 100% of the tax burden on property owners. It's enough for me to look at going back to either Texas or Florida.

Can't say I'm surprised about Shrewsberry. He would have been an idiot to not capitalize on this season. Penn State would probably stink next year even if he stayed. whole team was 5th year seniors.
So true. It's too bad really, he seemed to be a great coach for them. And I like his attitude with his players.

I lived in Iowa City for quite a while, and they have a similar problem to our football team - even in an "up year," their fans take a lot longer to buy in, and ticket sales lag. They also have trouble replicating the passion for their more prominent sports team (football for them, hoops for us) for their less prominent sports team (hoops for them, football for us). Not quite to the extent of our football fans, but their fans have been hurt before and the Lickliter years really did them in. However, similar to Memorial Stadium, Carver-Hawkeye can get shockingly loud when you get an energetic fan base in there and fill the place up. There are also a LOT of Iowa football fans who come into town for a game weekend that are not willing to drive to Iowa City for a weeknight basketball game. I know everywhere deals with that problem, but when you have a good tradition of winning, more out-of-town fans turn it into a habit.

One thing Iowa basketball has a problem with that Illinois football does not, however, is the arena is in a terrible location for students. Football is not in a perfect location, but it's seven weekends a year and there's epic tailgating right by it - well worth the jaunt. The basketball arena is in this weird little enclave that's hard to drive to, let alone walk to, and it's not really walking distance for any students when it's cold out. I would say Carver-Hawkeye is one of the more uninspiring facilities for football/basketball venues in all of the Big Ten.

With how good the women's team has been, plus with the huge popularity of wrestling at Iowa, the men's team is less of a priority than you would think for as solid as they have been under Fran.

One of my best friends lives there and says that people root for them obviously but there is a lot of apathy because everyone knows how the story is going to end with Fran's teams and their non-existent defense every season.

Shrews was picking it up on the recruiting front for PSU, so this is really good news.
I think it’s worse for us now; he has a closer pipeline to our talent in southbend than he did at PSU; east coast vs Midwest. We will be fighting for the same guys now

It's better in that he will no longer have the opportunity to beat us three times in a single season, at least not until Notre Dame eventually joins the B1G.

I cannot speak intelligibly one way or the other as to how the regional recruiting scene is trending…I’m just glad we don’t have to deal with his game prep. and scheming chops multiple times in conference play.
